Dear Friends,
The two had earlier met in Indonesia during the 33rd Cairns Group Ministerial Meeting in early June and expressed their full commitment to revive the WTO Doha Round. Before leaving for US on June 15th, Minister Sharma said that "the impasse has been broken" over the WTO's Doha round talks and that "India is keen that the WTO negotiations resume”.
This is a serious development on the WTO front and signifies a significant policy shift within a month of the UPA government’s second term.
In view of this, some of us have drafted a set of letters (attached and enclosed) addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi questioning the Indian government’s urgency to conclude the Doha round. We have also attached a Call to Action to give you a brief background of where the WTO negotiations are at present.
We would request you to add your organisation’s voice to this effort by signing on to these letters. To sign on, please send your name and organisation to Afsar Jafri a.ja...@focusweb.org or Shefali Sharma she...@thirdworldnetwork.net . The deadline to sign on is 9pm today, June 17th.
You may also fax these letters directly to the Prime Minister’s office in Delhi, to Mrs Sonia Gandhi at INC office in Delhi, to Mr. Anand Sharma at the Ministry of Commerce in Delhi as well as to the Indian Embassy in the US.. The fax numbers are mentioned on each letter.
We request you to please circulate these letters widely to all your networks and like minded groups.
Looking forward to receiving your endorsement by this evening.
In solidarity,
Shalmali Guttal, Afsar Jafri and Benny Kuruvilla (Focus on the Global South)
