TablEdit Users Say:

"I am a banjo player/instructor from Vancouver B.C. Canada and have been using TablEdit for a little over 4 years. I use it to transcribe music for students as well as to post arrangements to my banjo blog. It is dead simple to use and produces clean tablature to the users specifications. When I look at the amount of use I have gotten out of this software it was a bargain and updates are included in purchase price. I recommend it to anyone interested in creating tablature for banjo or any other fretted instrument."

TablEdit has supported banjo tablature since it's earliest days. TablEdit was the first tablature program to handle the fifth string correctly, and supports four string banjo as well! The first thing to do when starting a new TAB for banjo is to select the instrument. This is very easily done by opening a new file, clicking on the tuning to the left of the TAB staff and select your preferred banjo tuning from the pull down list. If you don't find your preferred tuning on the pull down list, just select the one that's closest and adjust the individual strings to suit your needs.EASY!Now, to be totally honest, Matthieu and I are not banjo players, we're guitarists. But we recognize the special and unique qualities that make the banjo the instrument that it is. With that in mind, we decided that I should ask a banjo player for their thoughts about TablEdit and the banjo.

I use TablEdit as a part of my instructional program. I find it to be an instrumental component for my students and myself. It gives me the ability to create lessons for my students that they can follow either by using the free viewer or printouts of the tablature. For the student, they benefit greatly by having the ability to adjust the tempo to whatever speed they need and select specific phrases they may be having trouble with.I play bluegrass banjo in a band and need to be able to work out my own breaks. TablEdit gives me the freedom to write, edit and playback my creations. I don't always remember what I've played in the past, so it's nice to be able to refresh by memory from the files I've made.Whether you are a beginning musician, or a proficient picker, I'm confident that you will find TablEdit as useful and helpful as I do.

This option allows a tablature to be automatically reorganized, measure by measure, in order to render it playable by a human performer. In this case, the "From Fret:" and "To Fret:" settings are ignored.

Depending on the number of lines per system, TablEdit creates a tablature for dulcimer, mandolin, banjo or guitar. The tuning of the instrument is not recognized, so it must be adjusted before or after import.

The field that appears in the upper right corner represents the width of the image to be imported. Contrary to what you might think, a huge image does not guarantee the best recognition. Generally, an image width of 1000 pixels is more than enough to import a tablature page efficiently. For a music staff page, it is better to use 2000 pixels. The field in question allows you to change the image width so that TablEdit resizes the image to be imported. For example, you have a 9000x11000 pixel image. Without correction, TablEdit will fail to recognize the partition. On the other hand, if you force a width of 1200, the recognition will be optimal.

When you import a pdf, a field appears at the top left that allows you to change the resolution of the image created by Ghostscript. Defaulting to 150, the resolution sometimes needs to be increased so that TablEdit can work on a larger image. For example, doubling the resolution to 300 will double the size of the image. By combining this setting with the image width you can create a reasonably sized, well defined grayscale image that will give excellent results. For example if the resolution has been set to 300 and the natural width is 2480 pixels. It may be profitable to force an image width of 1240.

Since all the useful routines have been created for importing a tablature image, we added the less original possibility of importing a notation staff image. It is necessary to tell TablEdit the key signature so that the program knows that it is a musical staff and not a banjo tablature...
