to Kenya Vetiver Network
And this from John Greenfield, who's been involved in the planting
there:

Dick,
How interesting, these guys are working in the same area and the same
District, Ranga Reddy, so there have got to be vetiver hedges in the
area somewhere. I recognise the photo on page 3, by the trees and
rocks, this is where we planted a long hedge which I photographed for
our slides.

Dick, if you have Benoit Dewandel’s email address, you could send him
a more precise location of our project, it was in the catchment area
of a stream called ‘Pulandari Vagu’ which emerges near the village of
Maheshwaram and drains in to the River Musi, which is a tributary of
the River Krishna, 15km South of Hyderabad. Our project covered and
area of 36K ha.

I received a copy of the project’s ‘final’ report from Mike Baxter in
the 1990s which stated what they had achieved and I quote: (sic) “With
the introduction of vegetative moisture conservation measures by
introduction of Khus (vetiver),as vegetative hedge, it has become one
of the major innovations for conserving the moisture by intercepting
runoff water, increase infiltration and percolation of run off in to
the soil, thereby recharging the ground water. So far an area of 5336
Ha is covered with vegetative barriers”.

Unfortunately, bad habits die hard, they also seemed to be protecting
bunds with vetiver hedges!, but with 5K Ha of hedges planted, there
must be some still there conserving runoff.

John.
