Just recently an old newsletter (March 1990!) of The Vetiver Network
was (re-)published on the website (see files). Back then 19 countries
are counted among those in which Vetiver System (VS) is used (now >100
countries). Kenya is among these 19 countries, in good African company
of Tanzania, Madagascar , Ethiopia, Nigeria, Mali and Ghana.
From the newsletter: “In Kenya the Soil Conservation Division of the
Ministry of Agriculture is carrying out performance trials on vetiver
in Embu, and we have heard from Mervyn Carnnelly at Lake Nairasha (EP:
Naivasha) that he has used vetiver for soil conservation for many
years.”
Back then the Kenyan government already took Vetiver Systems
seriously, doing research on this.
And where are we now?
Please be welcome to write what you do with Vetiver Systems in Kenya,
and add pictures. Good picture series will go to the TVNI websites,
and the best ones get prices!

It subsequently turned out that Mervyn was not using Vetiver. As we
heard at the Vetiver Workshop in March the Embu trials were not
successful. No particular reason - probably bad application and a
lack of knowledge. We all know that under Embu conditions vetiver
should grow very well. On the other hand we were told by KARI that
the vetiver trials at Kisi were very successful. I would like to see
the results. can someone get hold of them.

These must be well documented in the book I had borrowed from Muriithi,
KARI-HQ. Will check it out next time I go there.

Dear All,

Am the Chapter Chair for EEIU Nabuur and the founder of the Institute for African Ecology and Philosophy. We are intrigued with the ongoing research and would like to participate from the level of volunteers. There is need for Vetiver Kenya to create a stronger link with the EEIU (Eco Ethics International Union), you need to member the EEIU and work yourselfs through the system. EEIU is well placed in over 200 Countries and i think that Vetiver Systems can use this opportunity to continue a wonderful innovation. We need not invent the wheel every decade, we just have to build up on the stable conditions.

We have been operating through our outreach organ, the Project Nabuur Initiatives, and am ready to continue with this organisation towards diversification of our involvement, Elise Pinners is a member to our Project Nabuur Initiatives and i hope she will introduce Vetiver Systems to our membership. I am a member of this kenya network and i hope to learn more from those who have been in the game long enough. Though a social scientist, am ecologically viable, with diversity of experience for advocacy and implementation. We are not an interest group, neither are we a donor community but we participate widely on humanistic stances.

You are welcome to learn more on our projects at www.eeiu.org

You could also visit www.meetup.com/projectnabuur and join in large numbers.

Best wishes,

Boaz
