Dear all,
Last week (22-24 April) I presented Vetiver Systems at the
International Engineer’s Conference organized by the Institution of
Engineers of Kenya (IEK). The theme of the conference was: ‘Food,
Water and Energy Security – Engineers’ Challenges of the 21st
century’. My presentation was almost 1h; I got many positive
reactions!
It was a well-organised conference with contributions from many
sectors, participants from private sector, and many ministries, and
the press. Major points during the conference, of interest to us:
1. Energy: most of it comes from hydropower… but:
2. Water resources in Kenya are dwindling due to climate change
(heavier rain, more runoff & erosion, less groundwater storage, so
droughts have more impact) and mismanagement (ref. to forest
destruction in Mau, Aberdares, etc. and to waste of water, wrong and
over-extraction of ground water, poor farming practices)
3. To improve food security increasing reliance on irrigated farming
is encouraged… (needless to discuss how this might be difficult if
water resource management does not improve).
4. Water quality improvement needs due attention: treatment of waste
water from sewage, industry, mining, etc.
For all those interested, please see the slide presentation that I
gave in the conference, uploaded here in 'Files' (in this KEVN site).
