Fundraising: We are all one team!!!!!!!!!!! And there is only one account: Team Kenya
2013.
There are two ways to donate:
1. Instructions for
giving by check: Write a check, make it
payable to newhope church, and, in the memo line, write "[Your Name] - Haiti
Mission Trip". Make sure you
have everyone send or give you any checks they write. Please place them in an envelope (do not seal
it), put your name on the front, and then give the envelope to me.
2. Instructions for
giving on line: Go to the newhope church
website (www.newhopenc.org), click on the i-giving icon in the lower right of
the home page, complete all the donation information, and,
in the purpose section click on Hope Missions Trips, and in the notes section,
write "[Your Name] - Haiti Mission Trip".
Service Trip Itinerary: Trips
to Kenya are generally 10 days in length and include the following:
·
Travel to Kenya;
·
5 days in Kiria.
Ø Service projects are determined by needs in the community (priorities
are set by the town leadership council) at the time of the service trip.
Ø Teams will receive a general itinerary 30-45 days prior to
the trip, followed by a detailed itinerary approximately 7-14 days before
departure.
·
All meals, bottled water, and travel
within Kenya are covered; and
·
Travel home.
Where Will We be Going? We
will be going to Kiria, a rural village approximately 2-hrs drive time from
Nairobi. Kiria is at the base of The
Aberdare Mountains.
What Will the Weather be Like? In
July, which is their winter, it will be nice…like early fall in Asheville. J
Kiria is more than a mile above sea level, so there’s always a
mountainous cool in the air.
What Will We be Doing? A
lot of the trip will be devoted to continuing to build relationships with the
Kenyans. I’m anticipating that a lot of
our time will be spent in and around the Primary School there in Kiria. The exact details of what kinds of things we
will be working on will be determined as the dates of each trip draw closer.
What Will Our Accommodations be Like? Most
likely, we will stay in Nairobi the first night, and then at The Panorama in Lake Naivasha for the
majority of the time when we’re hanging out in Kiria. As with all the trips, a safari will be
included at the tail-end of the trip.
Most likely, at the end of the safari, we will stay at one of the game
lodges on the grounds of whichever national park we tour. Just so you know, The Panorama is an awesome place to stay. The way The
Panorama is configured, each of us will probably have one or two roommates,
and each room will have its own bathroom.
How Long Does it Take to Fly to Kenya? A
long time. Typically, about 20+ hours.
Will I be Safe in Kenya? Safety
is paramount! 410 Bridge staff will do
everything possible to ensure our safety.
Experienced Kenyan drivers, like Charles (2010) and Patrick (2011 and
2012), who are aware of all transportation routes, communities, and hotels,
will provide transportation. As an extra
precaution, our team will not be permitted to venture out at night from the
compound in Nairobi (1st night) or from The Panorama in Lake Naivasha.
(I probably wouldn’t venture too far from the game lodge in the reserve
our last night either. The kitty cats in
Kenya are not as cuddly as the ones you might encounter at Petsmart. At least, the ones
in Petsmart won’t eat you.) We will practice staying together as a team
the moment we assemble at RDU the day we depart, because it will be imperative
that we move about as a team throughout the entire length of the trip. As in almost every place in the world, you
are urged to pay attention to your surroundings and to keep your valuables
secure (or, better yet, don’t bring any/many.)
One Shirt, One Pair of Pants, One Love: Regarding
airline travel and luggage stuff, each of us will be able to check one bag each
(UP TO 50 LBS)
and to bring along one carry-on bag.
Required Reading for all Team Members: When
Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian
Fikkert. This book can be ordered from
Amazon; copies may be available in the resource center at newhope church central campus.
Immunizations, Medications, and General
Health Preparedness: Traveling to a foreign country can be risky. As such, the CDC in Atlanta has provided
information regarding travel to every country in the world. Each participant is to have received all CDC
required and recommended immunizations prior to departing on the trip.
At
this time, the only required vaccination is for Yellow Fever (NOTE: You will not be allowed out of the airport in
Kenya if you don’t have a yellow immunization card indicating that you’ve
received the Yellow Fever vaccination).
There are some recommended immunizations, and it is recommended that you
consult with your doctor or a travel professional to discuss which
immunizations you should get and which meds you should bring (i.e., malaria
pills, etc.).
For
information about immunizations, malaria pills, etc, please visit the following
link: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/kenya.htm. Note: Some shot sequences can take several weeks to
be properly administered; it is recommended that you begin to pursue all
required immunizations soon.
For
health-related travel advice and help with obtaining recommended immunizations,
malaria pills, etc., I recommend contacting Concentra (919/941-1911 or -1901)
in Durham, NC.
Travel Insurance: Sometimes
accidents happen, and sometimes people get sick. Blue Cross/Blue Shield does not work over in
Kenya. As such, travel insurance is
required to provide assistance should one of us need to be emergency air-lifted
out of Kenya. The $3,500 trip cost
includes this valuable insurance coverage.
