Evening folks hope you all have fun plans for the weekend.  Wanted to pass along something I found helping two stations do some troubleshooting.  I had one station out in Western KY who could hit my station and we would go through the 15 handshake attempts and then disconnect.  I could see their signal on the spectrum scope. Then I had another station about 30 miles as the crow flies from me that was hitting my station at S9+10, and having the same behavior.

We went through all normal troubleshooting steps, checking cables, audio levels, etc.  After sometime I asked the station about 30 miles from me what version VARA they were running.  They were a few sub-versions behind but still on major release version 4  We decided they should try and update VARA to the latest.  They did that and we tested again and all worked as it should.

So I emailed the station out in Western KY to ask them to do the same.  We just finished testing and their station connected and passed traffic without issue as well.

So if you have had trouble connecting over the last month or so, where you could hit my station and we would roll through the handshake request and not make a connection you may want to update VARA.

More than happy to test with anyone who wants to.

FWIW, this started happening with Vara HF versions 4.6.3 and above, for stations running really old versions like 4.4.x. I had a handful of P2P stations that needed to update on the Winlink Wednesday net, and am still running 4.6.2 on my gateway just in case. Always good to keep the software up to date!

I contacted Jose the Vara author and his suggestion was just to update. You can tell when this happens because there's a longer delay in between the first couple of transmissions during connection, then the receiving just goes into a zombie loop. I keep hoping there will be an update in either Vara HF or Winlink P2P that fixes another issue I see often, where the receiving station replies to a connection attempt and then replies to another connection attempt before fully connecting to the first caller. Both stations now think they are connected and a series of NACKs ensue..

Thanks Roland!
