Before we dive into my black light party favors round up, here are a few tips to help with shopping for your glow in the dark party. Most important: remember that not everything that looks neon will glow. When shopping for my glow parties, I carried a blacklight flashlight in my bag so I could check items at the store.
SUPER-TIP: After my first glow party was over, I boxed up all the glowing goodies in a box together rather than storing them away with my normal party stuff. This helped me to easily keep track of the special stuff that glows. It also made it super easy to throw together an impromptu glow party when my kids wanted to have friends over on a random Friday night. Throwing a Glow Party with just a few moments notice is a total #SupermomMoment.
SERVING PIECES. I am a pretty big fan of white serving pieces all the time, but white serving pieces are a must for a glow party! A white plate will help enhance the glowing effect of your food table. If something glows really well, clear glass can be fun to show off the different color. Even if that particular food does not glow, serve it on something white!
Dancing around in the blacklight and checking out all the glowing stuff is sure to be the highlight of your glow party, but your guests will probably also need something to do. Believe it or not, being able to glow comes in handy. As a predator, a sudden bioluminescent light can surprise and stun potential prey, or illuminate them to make it easier for the predator to see. Some animals, like the anglerfish, use their light as a lure in the deep sea to draw prey to them. As prey, it can distract or misdirect a predator for a time, allowing the prey to quickly escape. A glowing light can also signal to predators that the potential prey is toxic, or even serve as a warning sign for others that a predator is in the area.
Want to see bioluminescence in the ocean for yourself? While you might not be able to dive to the deep sea, you can see glowing plankton from the surface. Some tropical and temperate locations, like Florida, are home to bioluminescent bays that glow blue and green with bioluminescent plankton. You can dive, snorkel, kayak or simply observe from shore to enjoy the show.
I strongly dislike this style of beauty marketing. Glowy skin is glowy skin. The underlying causes of dull skin won't change with the passing of the trend seasons, and the products that best transform it into glowing skin will always vary from person to person.
I generally double cleanse with either a cleansing water or an oil-based first cleanser followed by a neutral to low pH foaming second cleanser to get my skin thoroughly clean without stripping it of its natural moisture. Avoid overly harsh, alkaline foaming cleansers and soaps, though. They will quickly and completely wash away oil and product residue, but they're also likely to dehydrate your skin so that it loses its glow in a totally different way.
Dryness occurs when the upper layers of skin are deficient in lipids and sebum. Without enough ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids filling in and linking together dead cells in the horny layer and without enough sebum forming a protective layer on top, skin becomes rough and loses the ability to hold moisture. There goes your glow.
Dry skin lacks oils. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, lacks water, and that deficiency is another common cause of dullness. The two conditions often occur together, since a lack of oils and lipids allows water to escape skin more easily. But where dryness generally causes dullness and a rougher texture at the surface, dehydration usually reduces your skin's plumpness, bounce, and inner glow.
If your skin looks dull due to dehydration, you can increase its radiance by layering on products that contain plenty of humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. You'll find these most reliably in watery skincare products like hydrating toners and serums and, more importantly for dehydrated skin, sheet masks. Slowly add these types of products to your daily routine and watch your glow increase with your hydration.
