Today, we celebrate the 101st birth anniversary of the renowned Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Despite his movies, inimitable filmmaking and love for cinema, he was also known for his collaboration with veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee aka Satyajit's favourite hero.

Soumitra and Satyajit are well-known for their famous collaboration, iconic movies and characters they have given to the world. The duo together worked in 14 movies, starting from 'Apur Sansar' to 'Shakha Proshakha'.

Did you watch Nathicharami? I felt it was a bold movie with excellent acting by all and overall a technically crisp movie by the entire team. This particular theme (which is for mature audiences) is quite unusual for Indian movies. Do check it out..

Since then, buoyed by a film crazy public and a huge Tamil diaspora, spread all over the world, Tamil cinema has gone from strength to strength. No write-up on Tamil cinema is complete without a reference to the legendary superstar of the Tamil film industry, the incredible Rajnikanth. Rajnikanth is a larger than life figure, and almost a demigod to tens of millions of Tamilians all over the world. His movies transcend cinema and are cultural and national events.

In terms of revenues generated, and the sheer number of movies made, the Telugu film industry is the second biggest in India after Bollywood. The state of Andhra Pradesh, where Telugu movies are made, is known for its craze for cinema, and has the most cinema halls in India, 2809 out of a total Indian strength of 10,167.

Offer any help you can give to a film production unit shooting a film or a television soap. Offer to be an assistant director at nominal pay, or even as a unit hand. Help out in any way possible. Nothing beats actual experience in movie making. Get a first hand knowledge of how movies are actually made. Should hold you in good stead later.

Many movies and television soaps in India, especially in regional languages, operate at very low budgets. Most regional language film producers would gladly have a trained film editor like you, even one without much experience, as their official film editing expert, especially if you agree to work for free, or for a nominal pay.

If you are an aspiring film editor in India, Mumbai is the place where you should be. All the best movies are made in Mumbai, most of the talented and creative people in India are already in Mumbai. You should be there too. Besides, most of the money in this business is in Mumbai.

There are are plenty of websites on the internet that offer raw video footage for free (check out royaltyfreestockvideofootage.com, for instance.) Or you could make use of DVDs from really old movies to get some great footage.

Movies can be a very effective way to understand something new or to reinforce or counter stereotypes. They can also spread misinformation. Till a decade or so ago, dementia was rarely depicted in Indian movies, so the few available movies were a significant source of their understanding of the medical aspects of dementia, its symptoms, treatment, and impact on the person and family. But now many Indian movies with seniors include a mention of dementia, though the quality and reliability of dementia depiction has suffered and is less-researched.

Note that short movies only depict a small slice of the dementia and care situation. It is unrealistic to expect such movies to give any good educational insight, but these short movies could be suitable to get a glimpse, especially if sensitively made.

Some of the movies listed below are award winning movies but have not been reviewed yet as they are not available in theatres/ OTT. Some were available for some time but are no longer available in cinema halls, as DVDs, or for online viewing. In some cases, it may be possible to contact the directors and get a special screening. If you have any updates about their availability, please let us know at dementia...@gmail.com, thanks!

Others Pending Reviews: Some movies that are supposed to be depicting dementia but have not been viewed and so cannot be commented on include the following: The Kashmir Files (some viewers have reported that the mention of dementia is barely a sentence or so, and only to explain some lapses of memory), Dvaita:Duality (2021) (IMDB entry Opens in new window), Someday(see news here Opens in new window, see Wikipedia page here Opens in new window ), and Goldfish (IMDB entry Opens in new window, trailer on Youtube Opens in new window) The review of Goldfish by ex-caregiver Nishi Pulugurtha can be seen here Opens in new window. If any viewers have any additional comments on any of these, please email your impressions to dementia...@gmail.com.

As a teen, I also learnt many a phrase of Nepali while playing Carrom with my Nepalese neighbors. What heightened my interest in languages even further is a manga animated series named Ninku (忍空) which I watched at the age of 10, alongside another series named Flame of Recca (烈火の炎). It will be unjust to not mention the several kung-fu movies that I watched throughout my life.

As for the movies and filmmakers that made the cut, look at our list of the 100 best films of the 1960s below, where the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky and Miloš Forman are rightfully celebrated.

Once calling Charulata his favourite of all his movies, Ray injects a passionate sense of vivid urgency into his 1964 masterpiece, crafting an intense romance that rivals any Hollywood offering. Set in 1880 and shot in gorgeous monochrome, the film traces a beautiful drama of repressed desire, with many considering it to be one of the most vehement movies ever made.

Speaking of iconic European filmmakers, the French mastermind Robert Bresson was as important in the rise of the national new wave as Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut and Agnès Varda. Creating a number of classic French movies throughout the decade, Bresson worked from a traditional foundation and provided a quality foothold for such aforementioned names to flourish into excellence.

Truth is stranger than fiction. Though this old saying is driving a number of Tollywood directors to churn out movies inspired by real-life incidents, the audience still seem to be hooked onto fiction. Fantasy, no matter how unrealistic and far-fetched, continues to ring the bells at the box-office. The Bengali audience loves watching sleuths from best-sellers digging out truth on big screen. Truth is, not too many films based on real-life events are finding takers in Bengal.

Bollywood is an informal term that is popularly used to describe an Indian movie industry that mainly produces films in the Hindi language. It is based in the city of Mumbai, India and although people often incorrectly use the term for referring to the entire Indian cinema, Bollywood only represents a part of the Indian movie industry and not the whole. Not only is Bollywood the largest film producing industry in India, but is also one of the largest in the entire world. The name Bollywood is a portmanteau word that has been created combining the previous name of Mumbai, which was Bombay, and the name for the heart of the American movie industry, being Hollywood. Although Bollywood is normally related to Hindi cinema, many Bollywood movies have been frequently found to use a number of regional languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, and so on. There has also been an increase in the usage of Indian English both in the songs and dialogues of the Bollywood movies (Mishra, 2002).

The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Parallel Cinema movement, which although had begun with Bengali cinema, gained a lot of prominence in Bollywood. Hindi movies belonging to this movement include Neecha Nagar of 1946 by Chetan Anand and Two Acres of Land of 1953 by Bimal Roy (Ganti, 2004). Their commercial success and critical acclaim created a path for neorealism Indian filmmakers of the Indian New Wave. Other parallel moviemakers included Shyam Benegal, who continued producing realistic movies all through the 1970s. This period saw a number of action and romance films and was dominated by actors like Dharmendra, Mithun Chakraborty and Rajesh Khanna and actresses like Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore and Helen. (Mishra, 2002) It also saw the emergence of Amitabh Bacchan, who slowly became a superstar and even today rules not only Bollywood but the hearts of millions of his fans. With movies like Sholay, Jai Shantoshi Ma and Dewar in 1975, Salam Bombay, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Maine Pyar Kiya in the 1980s, and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in the 1990s the modern era of Indian cinema had dawned (Ganti, 2004).

In conclusion, it should be mentioned that although some people may say that most Bollywood movies are not very artistic or do not possess esthetic tendencies which could be seen in the films of just a few exceptional Bollywood filmmakers, like Satyajit Ray, the important fact remains that Bollywood actors and filmmakers display a speculative and unique impulse which is reflected by the hearts of millions of its viewers who live not only in India but all over the world. Such is the power and magic of Bollywood.

I lay wide awake coming up with excuses, and conveniently placed the blame on our tendency to stereotype. Bengali films invariably translate to sentimental tearjerkers; Tamil movies are louder than a machhi market; Gujarati films are slapstick comedies and other regional cinema industries were too small to even warrant a stereotype.

Quickly, I shifted the blame onto my peers, since our watchlists are inspired by FOMO. We tweet about the trending movies, post mini reviews of them on Insta stories and nobody wants to run low on the social currency of cinema charcha.

While Bollywood continues to struggle to deliver world-class films in the industry, Tollywood, also known as the Telugu film industry has emerged as one of the biggest film industries in recent times. Delivering global hits like the Baahubali saga, RRR, and the KGF series, Tollywood has garnered millions of new audiences in the past few years. So, in this article, we are going to list the top Telugu movies of all time, according to IMDb ratings.
