to Kenfig / Cynffig - The Complete History (A Welsh Heritage Project)
As a child I lived in Whitchurch on the outskirts of Cardiff. My father used to take us to Kenfig Sands on a day trip. I recall parking our car then walking past a pool that had what looked like a church spire emerging from the water, probably about 15 to 20 foot above the water level. The masonary was in good condition. We visited the site at least 4 times and I was always fascinated with the place. The long walk through the sands dunes to the sea was also exciting as we used to pick up used 303 cartridges. My father used to tell used that they used Kenfig for training exercises during the second world war.
I now live in New Zealand and on a previous visit back to Wales I went to Kenfig to see if I could find the pool with the spire. Alack alas I was not able to locate it. I asked some locals if they had any knowledge of the spire and none I spoke with seemed to know of it. Can anyone provide any information ?
I will be returning to Wales after the 21st April 2016 and would love to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and find the missing spire.
best wishes
Derek Webber
