Boss Pokmon are rare types of Pokmon. They are stronger and larger than normal Pokmon, and fight more aggressively than normal Pokmon when in battle. They cannot be captured, but can drop several rare items upon defeat.
Boss Pokmon do not display levels above their heads, unlike normal Pokmon. Instead, their levels are scaled based on the highest-level Pokmon in the player's party when the boss Pokmon is engaged in battle.
Boss Pokmon have colored text that shows above them, which lacks a level and can be seen from farther away than the overhead text above normal Pokmon. This text indicates the level advantage compared to the player's highest-level Pokmon that the boss Pokmon will be.
For example, if the player's highest-level Pokmon is level 90, a rare (blue label) boss Pokmon will be level 110 (Boss pokemon are able to exceed the normal maximum level). However, if the player's highest-level Pokmon is level 60, the same rare boss Pokmon will instead be level 80. The moveset of a wild boss Pokmon may change with each battle (if a player escapes from or is defeated by the boss Pokmon); however, its growth, nature, ability, and IVs will not change between encounters.
A Mega Evolved boss Pokmon will attempt to spawn once every 10000 ticks (8.33 minutes), with a 30% chance of success (with default config settings). The species of Mega Evolution is randomly selected from all existing Mega Evolutions that can spawn in the spawn location, noting that these spawn locations may differ from regular pokemon of that species (a full list can be found here). Mega evolved boss Pokmon can only naturally spawn as epic, legendary and ultimate bosses.
Mega Evolved boss Pokmon can be spawned with the /pokespawn command with the regular form of the Pokmon and the boss:[epic-ultimate] argument. For example, an ultimate boss Mega Venusaur can be spawned with the command, /pokespawn venusaur boss:ultimate).
These boss Pokmon spawn within the world with a random chance on each spawn (by default, 1/256). The two exceptions to this are haunted bosses and drowned bosses, which spawn in haunted towers and the special quest "The Drowned", respectively.
Bosses of uncommon tier or above are tinted according to the type of boss Pokmon that they are (this tint is not to be confused with a shiny pokemon or a special palette). Common, uncommon, rare, epic and haunted boss Pokmon will have their regular palette, while legendary, ultimate and drowned boss Pokmon will be shiny.
Boss Pokmon can drop several rare items after they are defeated. Different boss Pokmon tiers have different possible drops, but all of them can drop up to three different items (one from each group), as well as the non-boss drops for that species (for example, a boss Venusaur will drop vines).
Mega Evolved Boss Pokmon can also drop the corresponding Mega Stones required for the boss Pokmon's Mega Evolution. The first defeated Mega Evolved Boss Pokmon of each Pokmon species will always drop its Mega Stone, while subsequent boss Pokmon defeats will have a chance of dropping the corresponding Mega Stone again.
For example, a player who has not obtained any Mega Stones or a Mega Bracelet defeats a boss Mega Venusaur. The Venusaur is guaranteed to yield a Mega Bracelet and a Venusaurite. If the player finds another boss Mega Venusaur, there is a chance that the boss will drop a second Venusaurite for the player upon defeat. If the player later finds a boss Mega Blastoise, the Blastoise will be guaranteed to drop a Blastoisinite because it is the first Mega Blastoise that the player has defeated.
In addition to their regular drops, boss pokemon have a chance to drop a rare candy upon defeat. This Rare Candy may stack with others in the regular drop pool, meaning it is possible to recieve multiple rare candies from the same boss pokemon.
