Yourgame may not have been updated, that's why your version is fine, but after reinstall it will download "broken" file. Activision after a month changed execuable version to official 1.8, but it still breaks everything, because you can't enter any 1.7/x1.8 server. Retail versions are still 1.7. Also it resets stats from old profile folder, which 1.7 uses (not a big deal since x1.8 saves it in %localappdata%). Some screenshots from Steam Version (yes, I broke cod :D):

About risk: Activision patched all CoD series, where this vulnerability occured. The exploit we are talking is called RCE (Remote Code Execution). This particular RCE was dangerous for host. Host has to receive the data of every other player. The hacker could easily send malicious packets to host PC by overflowing some buffers, so you could easily send any malware you wanted to. In cod4 this problem hardly ever existed, because you would have to run a listen server and a hacker would need to have rcon to do any damage. However in cod4 exist another RCE, which is also dangerous. Look how codx18 automatically installs on your pc without any permission. Hopefully x1.8 patch all known vulnerabilities. However I know another leaks in modern cods, which are still not patched. If you want more details I added threads about it. You can also search google for it.

I don't have the steam version so I can't help him, I read about downgrade servers, that install stuff, and tools for this that and the other, but naturally I'm wary of suggesting he installs anything of the internet, in case he ends up banned! I also read that you can just use the 1.7 file, which obviously I have, and replace the 1.8 file.

Most of the links on the SCS site to help are 'forbidden'. I added the SCS server to Qtracker, it is v1.7. In the Gametracker chat, one has posted, "hi make sure your patch is set to 1.7 as if ya got it from steam it is set to 1.8 all info can be found on our website at ". I didnt really want to register and I can't see it anywhere else on the site.

Reading a bit more around the subject, the 1.8 update seems to replace the iw3mp.exe, so he might just have to use my 1.7 version. At least he knows that's clean, and just hope it doesn't mess anything else up!

Hey random internet person/guest/registered user who found this topic.

You found a safe answer to your query, saved you loads of potential headaches, and if you were researching this for someone else, having a definitive answer is going to make you look like you know what you're doing!

Hello friends. I also have trouble getting the new version.

No message will be sent to me when I enter my phone number.

I am from Iran and my access is very limited

I need help. If there is another way to download version 21.1, please let me know

All it does is make the game run a bit smoother and give better stability on newer PC hardware with support for more textures and sound formats. It gives No advantage other than stability and maybe +15-25 fps depending on your hardware.

Gives advantages in terms of expanded asset counts for several important things, increasing map compatibility greatly even for big mods. Dont know anything about additional sound formats since that would require compiling in decoders and such. Some of which would have licensing problems. Activision got rid of mp3 decoders, which cost them a lot of money, because of that reason and went with open source. And of course greater anti-cheat protection.

In any case, the main reason for the update was the loss of their domain extension and change to ovh. Requiring both cod4x servers and all clients that use it to update. The older clients still look for the update servers with the old domain extension.

The patch before this new one was quickly released to fix that issue but it messed up some of the textures. Certain rock textures would render as solid white and some maps would crash immediately apon joining.

5) Did I mention it doesn't crash? Seriously Running windows 10 and 11 on stock CoD MW it crashes every map. If it doesn't crash on the map load it crashes about 10 seconds after joining. If I need to win key or alt tab off of the game more than twice on any map, it crashes. It's hard to stay motivated playing the game because it just crashed 10 seconds after getting back into the server after it just crashed switching maps.

* I bought a new Video card yesterday (3080 and retiring the 1080) I am going to wait and see if anything changes. I doubt it but it could just be current drivers not meshing with a 15 yr old game. CoD 4 always did crash a lot with cust maps/mods but what I'm getting is redic.
