Hi, I am a veteran kombucha drinker, and in the process of making my
own SCOBY to start brewing my own. So...

I am starting by fermenting a raw original GT's Kombcuha in my glass
jar, covered, in order to get my SCOBY. I am about four days in, and
not much is happening in the way of growing the culture. I suspect it
might be because my house is very cold and those temps stall growth.
So, I am moving it into my office at work (sorry, boss). It gets
pretty warm in here: 80-85 degrees max. Will that temp be too high for
any reason? I am hoping it will just expedite the process, but I don't
want to mess it up!

Also, once I start making the tea: Does anyone ever use yerba mate?
Sounds like a dynamic combo to me!

Hey,

I wouldn't think a max of 80°F would e too hot but to be sure maybe
leave on floor where might be slightly cooler.

Looking in wikipedia as I have never heard of YM was interesting...is
it a stimulant? they also say (cut and paste) Hot mate is currently
classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency
for Research on Cancer.

I'd try when you had a spare mushroom

Let us know how it goes

cheers

Hey there,

Good call on leaving it on the floor. I had it up on a shelf,
consequently right next to a heating vent. That could have been a very
steamy situation.

Yerba mate, as far as I have experienced, is just a type of green tea,
big with indigenous populations in South America. It is considered
somewhat of a stimulant, in that it has as much caffeine as other
green teas. But the antioxidants are said to be good for vitality, so
many know it as a tonic and drink it religiously. That is the first I
have heard of the "carcinogen thing", but usually Wiki is at least
somewhat on point. Perhaps I will re-think using it as the base of my
'bucha.
If my SCOBY grows, it's first baby will have your name on it. : )

BTW how old are you and how long you been using?

I am 53 and been drinking first thing every AM for over a year and notice I have very little gray hair as well as better facial skin tone (less wrinkles) than my peers

I am 28, and I guess I have only been drinking it for about 2 years...
and only when I can afford it. Hence, my goal to brew my own. I
suppose that might not make me a veteran. : ) But it does make me a
HUGE fan.

I too notice that I feel so energetic and wonderful when I drink it
regularly. I also notice improvement in my skin tone and texture. I
get dry, flaky-ish skin in the winter and I think it really helps with
that.
