I wondering what people would think about an android app? What would
be the requirements so that something like this could happen? I'm
wondering as a possible project because the only reason evernote,
simplenote, or spring pad beat KeepNote right now is their mobile
applications.

I'm welcoming suggestions, ideas, sketches, and etc. to help get my
self thinking about this more on a practical level.

Some outlining ideas of what the android app would and would not do:
* Would use Dropbox and allow you to open notebooks, probably one at a
time for speed considerations
* First few versions probably would not have any special text editors.
>>I'm not sure how this can be solved on android...
* it could also access any notebooks on the phone which provides
"offline" type abilities.

Again any suggestions are welcome.

Sounds incredible. Very keen. I use dropbox for syncing my linux box and my windows box, and on an (encrypted) usb that I can stick in any computer with a portable dropbox. I'm likely to get an android tablet at some point and this really would be a great thing! I'd even pay for it!

Yea I was thinking about it and the android app would have to be
basically a KeepNote on android. As in it handles the notebooks as is
from keepnote. once they appear somewhere on the device. Maybe the
notebook would be backed up or something because dropbox doesn't auto
sync to devices.

An android application is essential. Now, everyone has a tablet or a smartphone.

Just to say that keepnote is a very, very good app and it's free. thank's a lot.

I've been looking at Android app development. Android development is
primarily java based. Keepnote is python based. So most likely KN
would have to be rewritten for Android as opposed to a simple port.
However both have access to sqlite technology, so that's a start.

I'm wondering if there are already note-taking applications out there.

I've been quietly looking into this as well since I got my Android
tablet. ColorNote uses sqlite (including notes) and is quite good. There
is also an Evernote port for Android. However nothing matches Keepnote
IMHO so until we get an Android Keepnote port, I'll stick to the Jota
text editor on the tablet (and phone!) and cut-and-paste when I'm at my
computer.

What should be possible is to export Keepnote as HTML, copy that to the
tablet and at least be able to view my Keepnotes on the tablet but for
some reason the HTML export isn't working but I have had time to figure
out why.

So, +1 for a Keepnote Android port.

Well I have been pondering on the issue. For the first version I
thought it should be just a viewer. Here is so far how I've broken it
down having seen some other android opensource projects do something
similar.

Dropbox handling-- This would be the easiest way to sync the notebook.
First version would just download any thing new. Later it would also
be the same way updates are uploaded.

HTML to Text formatting -- editing HTML is hard in android. However
simple note has a cool way of dealing with that by using wiki-like
syntax to allow logical editing. This could be converted on save to
HTML and therefore compatible with keepnote and easy to edit and
implement and editor in android

Section of code to create tree-- Required for the next part. This is a
data tree of all the notes and their relations. I'm not sure if this
is already stored in the sqllite file or not in keepnote

Note viewer-- this would simply have a inital view of a tree of the
notes. a note could be selected and a browser window would be shown to
take the user to the html file of that note.

Again I would like feedback. I have bunch of notes on the issue and
trying to figure out the design of the application flow and features
we can reasonably make.

Note: evernote android was created by Evernote Corp. It also probably
has an extensive team of developers behind it and also has the benefit
now of having been around for a very long time and therefore has been
improved apon considerably since it first was released. It should not
act as a way to gauge process on a Keepnote android app for a very
long time although inspiration maybe.

Yes I am giving +1 to have the possibility to use it on Android too.

I was looking for a good notetakeing application very long and I m very very satisfied with the KeepNote. The only pain in the ass is really that there is no possibility you use it on android platforms.

Can the author reply his opinion on that - to enable the android usage :) of KeepNote.

Thanks very much !!!

Sorry to bump this message, but I've just discovered KeepNote and the only point that make me hesitate is the possibility to use it anywhere (I mean in my pocket additionally to my computers).

Anyway, thanks for all this great work here !

Has there been any progress on this in the last year?  Python does work on the android, see python-for-android and  for example python standalone app.

It would make sense to me to optimize the display of information from keepnote for a smartphone, with the treeview, listview, contents, and perhaps an "overview" pane displayed separately and  accessible by swiping left and right. The overview pane could have something like a "create note", "search for note", and list of recent notes list, similar to the popup you get with an app like tomboy/tomdroid. I like that app but it wont do all the great things (figures, comprehensive formatting) etc that keepnote has.

I would love this. I'm glad I found this topic, hope it's still a possibility. *crossing fingers*

For a very long time, I used KeepNote because it ran on my old Nokia n810 as well as my home computer, so I could use the application all the time. I would love to see it now for Android, as I've retired my n810 as my primary some time ago and now use an Android-based device. I would support a project to do this, so I hope someone is still considering it. Thanks!

Been using keepnote for a couple of years now and love it. Would like to see some sort of app that I could use on my playbook too but in the mean time I simply export my notebooks to my dropbox folder on my main pc and then simply open then again from the dropbox folder on any other machine I;m on; windows or linux. Any additions or changes get saved automatically.
I also open notebooks from my dropbox app on my Blackberry 9900 and simply read pages as html if I need to.

thanks a lot again for keepnote.

Theres a possibility that you wouldn't have to rewrite everything, see the stack overflow conversation here:

In addition to the above contribution, I found that there's also at least one development kit for creating python apps aimed at Android devices:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hipipal.qpyplus

The app's official description: "QPython is a script engine that runs on android devices. It lets your android device run Python scripts and projects. It contains the Python interpreter, console, editor, and the SL4A Library for Android. ... It offers the development kit which lets you easily develop Python projects and scripts on your Android device."

As a non-developer, I don't know whether it would be the right approach, of course... I just know that I've used KeepNote for years and would love to see it on Android; in my opinion it beats the pants off any of the popular services/apps available on the Web or any of the major OSes.

It would be a great idea to have it available on the phone. I don't see many (does one even exist?) using tree organization available for both the phone and PC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_notetaking_software and be able to sync between them.
