Subject: Two upcoming radio communications opportunities
Sent: Thu, Oct 13, 2011 3:58:50 AM

All:

There are two opportunities coming up related to radio communications:

1) On Tuesday, November 1, from 6-9 pm the City is offering its next radio communications CERT class.  The class is held at the CERT training facility at 997 Cedar Street and here is the description:

Learn about FRS radios, sometimes referred to as walkie-talkies, and how they can be utilized in an emergency response in your neighborhood or community group.  This class will cover an introduction to FRS radio operation and good radio communication practices.  If you have an FRS radio, please bring it to the class to get some hands-on practice.

OES is reserving spaces for Network members, so if you are interested, please email o...@ci.berkeley.ca.us or call 510.981.5605 and give your name, address, email, etc, as soon as possible.  Please specify that you are a Network member.

2) The following Saturday, November 5, the Network will hold a radio communications drill on from 10 am until noon at the Berkeley Marina*.  This drill will focus on using radio communications to support neighborhood disaster response. Short basic instruction will include setting up radios and communications procedures, then we will break up into groups far enough apart to practice.

If you have FRS radios, please bring them (labeled with your name and/or neighborhood group) to the drill.

Also, we are looking for folks who are experienced and comfortable with radio usage to give us a hand with those who need some help.  Please let me know if you are willing to help out.

For the drill, we will meet at the parking circle/turnaround at the end of Spinnaker Way (next to Caesar Chavez Park at the Bay) at 9:45 am.  Take University Ave to Marina Blvd, and make a right onto Marina Blvd.  Follow it past the DoubleTree hotel, then follow the bend to the left onto Spinnaker.  Park wherever you can and walk west on Spinnaker to the circle.

* If it looks to be bad weather, we will reschedule.  Rain date TBA.

Yours in preparedness,

--L
