After 36 years of exemplary and dedicated service to the City of Berkeley, City Manager Phil Kamlarz will retire on November 30, 2011. Highly respected by staff, elected officials past and present, and people from all sectors of the Berkeley community, and beyond, Phil Kamlarz will leave behind a long record of accomplishment on behalf of Berkeley. Recently, Mr. Kamlarz has been particularly instrumental in seeing the City through very difficult economic times. During this challenging period Berkeley’s AA bond rating was not only preserved, but was upgraded to AA+. We are grateful for his many years of service, for setting a tone of competence and respect throughout the organization, and wish him well in all of his future endeavors. PGE&E Pipeline Safety Update The City has been in alert status regarding our pipelines. After the San Bruno gas explosion in 2010, the City met with PG&E to document exactly where gas pipelines are located in Berkeley and learn their condition. One of the first steps was to arrange for notification to be sent to residents living near pipelines. There is a major line running along the majority of Seventh Street in West Berkeley. The City has learned that this line operates at a substantially lower gas pressure than the lines in San Bruno. PG&E reports that a comprehensive inspection and monitoring program is operating in real time on a 24-hour basis; that they are regularly conducting leak inspections, surveys, and patrols of their natural gas transmission pipelines. Click here for an interactive map to learn more about pipelines in your neighborhood. The City expects a safety update from PG&E in 2 weeks. Updates will be ongoing. Halloween/Day of the Dead Celebration Join the Ecology Center in celebrating Halloween/Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos) Celebration! The public is invited to bring an offering, photograph, or craft to the altar and to celebrate as our community honors our loved-ones, life, farm labor, and those that have sacrificed their health and lives for community well-being. Contacting Customer Service
The City of Berkeley has been working for the last several years to improve the ways residents can access services. Two of the most visible improvements are the Online Service Center and the 311 Call Center. With our Online Service Center www.CityofBerkeley.info/onlineservicecenter you can look up City staff phone numbers, download maps, apply for jobs, pay parking tickets, schedule building inspections, report graffiti, broken sidewalks, potholes and more. Call the 311 Call Center for basic services, M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. By calling (510) 981-CITY (2489) or “311” from any Berkeley landline, you can talk with Call Center staff to report missed garbage pickups, dumped furniture, pay bills, and more. Not sure where to start? Call 981-CITY or email custome...@cityofberkeley.info.
Annual Report Online
The City’s Annual Report was just mailed to every home and business in Berkeley. If you would like the interactive version, complete with links to City services, visit www.CityofBerkeley.info/annualreport. Catalog Choice Berkeley residents can now take advantage of a free service that will allow us to opt out of unwanted phone books, catalogs, advertising mail pieces. The free online service, powered by Catalog Choice, gives Berkeley residents and businesses a convenient way to prevent waste by opting out of telephone directories, catalogs, credit card and insurance offers, coupons, and other solicitations by visiting. The City of Berkeley has many programs that foster waste reduction and recycling. This service gives residents another tool for reducing their environmental footprint at home and at work. Here’s how it works: Residents go to the community portal: http://Berkeley.catalogchoice.org/ and sign up for the Catalog Choice service. Once registered, residents identify the individual catalogs and solicitations they no longer wish to receive. Catalog Choice delivers the opt-out request and tracks the company’s confirmation for the user. Berkeley residents can track the environmental benefits of their opt-outs measured in trees, greenhouse gas, solid waste and water saved. Helmet Giveaway Got a helmet? Need one?
