Councilmember Linda Maio
A few news items worth sharing follow. As always, we appreciate your comments, ideas, and suggestions. · WHERE TO CALL TO ASSIST A HOMELESS/OR ALMOST HOMELESS PERSON · PARTICIPATE IN PLANNING THE FUTURE OF OUR DOWNTOWN · “FRIENDS” OF THE LIBRARY ANNUAL BOOK SALE · PUBLIC SCHOOL VOLUNTEER: BERKELEY PUBLIC EDUCATION FOUNDATION · SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22ND, COUNTY OF ALAMEDA DISASTER PREPAREDNESS EVENT, KING SCHOOL
Homeless: Where to call As the economic slump continues, savings dwindle, we are bound to see more homelessness, whether it be people on the street or those sleeping in their cars or who are about to lose their home. At the end of this newsletter I’ll include more detail about services but two numbers are important to keep handy. 1. Mobile Crisis Unit (phone number) 510-981-5254: This City team works from 11:00am to 11:00 p.m., 7 days a week, and is out on the street making direct contact with people in need, connecting them to services, including shelter beds. Other times, call the number below. 2. The Multi-Service Center* is at: 1-866-960-2132. During the day you will be offered choices of services to select 12:00 - 4:00pm, but during the evening, call at 7:00 p.m., to see if there are beds available. A case manager should actually answer the telephone. After 8:00pm emergency shelter beds will be available.
HOMELESS SERVICES: Spread the Word
Most Berkeley residents know very little about what actual services exist and how effective they are. Our City's goal is to have a home for everyone. We know that a home, however modest, is essential to moving ahead in life--no surprise. Berkeley was recently recognized as having housed 48% of our homeless population over the last few years—a phenomenal achievement and one to be proud of. Yet, we continue to encounter people in trouble. Berkeley has a myriad of homeless services—services which have transformed the lives of many hundreds of people. Residents can help by spreading the word about where to go and what’s available.
This website provides a comprehensive list of the various services and providers: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/contentdisplay.aspx?id=5554
*At the Multi Service Center at 2362 Bancroft Way, people can get a morning snack, find out about their almost daily meals, get help with housing and food stamps. This Center, run by the Berkeley Food and Housing Project, even has a job board. 649-4965. It is only one of several locations for services, found on the website.
Downtown Berkeley Perceptions Survey
The Downtown Berkeley Association (DBA) is in the process of developing a Strategic Marketing Plan for Downtown Berkeley, as part of the rollout of our Property-Based Business Improvement District (PBID) in 2012. As part of that strategic marketing process we are looking to get input from a broad range of Berkeleyans and East Bay Residents on why they come--or do not come--to Downtown Berkeley; and what kind of improvements they would like to see in the future.
Please respond no later than Monday, October 24th! Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions or comments. Also, you can read more about the Downtown Berkeley PBID on our website at www.downtownberkeley.org.
