Apply Now for the AMSA Microbicides Leadership Institute! (If you are at Convention, stop by the Global Health Action Comittee Table and grab an application!)

Who: You!
What: are microbicides?
http://www.global-campaign.org /about_microbicides.htm
When: April 11-13, 2008
Where: Berkeley, CA
Why: Read on...
How:
http://www.amsa.org/global/aids/mli.cfm

Worldwide, nearly 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. HIV is affecting women and girls in increasing numbers, with the percentage of infections growing every year. 25 years into the epidemic, gender inequality and the low status of women are key factors in the spread of the virus. Current AIDS strategies do not address the needs of women, and the pandemic is not slowing. Microbicides, a promising new class of drugs, have the potential to reduce HIV transmission.

What can YOU do to help? Join the cutting edge of HIV prevention!

We are looking for motivated students who have a passion to improve the lives of others. We seek students who are enthusiastic about public health, are committed to reducing global health disparities, and have a strong interest in reproductive health. Selected students are expected to take the lead as part of the AIDS Advocacy Network (AAN)/Global Campaign for Microbicides, and to be active in the planning and implementation of the platform.

Topics  to be  discussed:
  • HIV/AIDS and its impact worldwide
  • Gender Based Violence
  • Microbicides-basics and in-depth science
  • Research on rectal microbicides
  • Ethics of Clinical Trials
Develop skills in Advocacy and grassroots organizing

  • Learn about the Power of Student Activism through:
    • Media Relations
    • Lobbying
    • Birddogging

If selected, you will be expected to:
  • Actively Plan and Execute AIDS Advocacy Network Events
  • Present on Microbicides at Your School and Within Your Community
  • Organize One Lobby Day or Direct Action Event Related to Microbicides in Your Region
  • Attend Your AMSA Regional Conference, Present on Microbicides
Now how do you apply? Complete the application found at the above website and email it to Sa...@brown.edu

Application Deadline is Tuesday, March 18th!

The Institute will provide food, housing, and all of the weekend's events. We ask that your school provide the cost of transportation for each student to demonstrate their commitment to and support of AIDS/Reproductive Health leadership skills.

Email me, Saira, with any questions!
