Subject: [BH] Blackshaw Support Circle update from 1st July

Morning all

Another really productive and inspiring meeting last night of our Support Circle:

  • Emma updated that the Community Share Offer, which only opened 12th June, had reached £142k of its £300k target, which is amazing! Once another £4k is pledged, we will move into a bracket where pledges are matched, so we’ll accelerate towards our goal much quicker. See enclosed links for more info https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lxi5LL7LdFY. If you wanted to invest just go to www.ethex.org.uk/equalcare for all the details, or contact Emma if you have any questions (copied). Money raised will go towards recruiting someone into Equal Care Coop to help Blackshaw & Hebden Bridge Support Circles to set up effectively, and to develop the software ‘engine’ which will enable the Support Circles to be largely self-managing once they are set up, so if you are looking to invest in something ethical, positive and local, you might want to explore this as an option; there are also attractive tax benefits associated with your investment, which is always nice!
  • In the interim, we decided to use an ‘off the shelf’ piece of software to help us start to develop the Volunteer part of the offering, matching people wanting support with those available to give it, and to help manage the scheduling of that time – this is because it will be too much for someone to do as a volunteer from our community, so we are seeking to take out some of the complexity in the process by using some software, to enable this to be more self-managed. We’re hoping to have trialled some options before our next meeting (4th August, 7pm Chapel), and we’ll aim to make a decision on the software at that next meeting. The way we envisage the system working is that:
    • volunteers who have some time to offer put their details into the system (we’ll make sure its super easy to do!),
    • and then those who need some support (of their friends and family) would look on the system to see if there is anyone available and send a message through direct to that person
    • then the individuals communicate with each other to sort the details
  • If you would like to offer some time to help someone who needs it in our community, with things like shopping, popping round for a chat, taking someone into town for example, then please let us know and we’ll add your name to the list; if you’ve already put your name down, then Louise has been in touch to confirm you are still happy to help, as we now need to get DBS checks sorted with you all, so please watch out for that communication and respond – its only a case of bringing some documents along, so its simple and we can get a batch done at the same time over a beer in the Newdy 😊
  • For the paid for care & support, we now have 3 trained carers in our community, and 3 in Hebden Bridge that will support us; we’ve developed the assessment process, and the carers will be writing profiles within the next few weeks to explain who they are and what kind of support they offer; we can then look at how many hours we have available and therefore how much support can be offered. If you are a trained & experienced carer and would like to become part of the Blackshaw Support Circle offering paid for care, then please get in touch with Kate (copied).
  • The regulatory body, CQC, have approached Equal Care Coop to ask them to work with them on improving the regulation framework, because with this new model of care that we are helping develop, the audit & assessment process will also need to adapt; it’s a fantastic coup that CQC have approached Equal Care Coop as 1 of 3 organisations offering a ‘new model’ of care, especially as they are still in the development stages – it made us feel proud to know that we are helping develop something that really could revolutionise how care is managed in the UK!
  • We also talked about helping to get some press coverage to help the share offer, so if you know anyone in media who may be interested in helping us get the message out, then please get in touch.
  • And finally, we have our Community Lunch this Friday 5th July 12noon until 2pm in the Chapel; this is in partnership with Suma and Great Rock Coop as part of Co-operatives Fortnight. It would be lovely to see people there, even if you just pop in for a brew; please mention it to folks that aren’t on the Google Group, it would be especially nice to see some of them there. The lunch is a way of us celebrating the power of co-operating and finding out about how much more we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal, plus free food – what’s not to like?!

Our next meeting is 4th August, 7pm in the Chapel, feel free to come along.

Cheers
