I'm testing remote smtp login on a server and keep getting 535 5.7.8 Error: authentication failed: authentication failure errors in the syslog and mail.log. Postfix is configured to use system user names and passwords.
This error can be frustrating, especially if you have important emails or files that you need to access. In this article, we will explore the common causes of this error and provide you with troubleshooting tips to help you fix the problem.
One of the most common causes of the error message is an invalid username or password. Double-check that you have entered the correct username and password. It is also essential to note that usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
If you have enabled any security settings for your Google account, such as two-factor authentication, it could be preventing you from logging in. Ensure that you have the correct authentication code or have disabled the security settings.
If you have enabled any security settings, ensure that you have the correct authentication code or have disabled them temporarily. This will allow you to access your account, and you can re-enable the security settings after resolving the error.
It is essential to take preventive measures to avoid encountering the error message in the future. Updating passwords regularly, using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, keeping antivirus software up to date, and regularly monitoring network connections are all ways to prevent unauthorized access to your Google account.
It is more often to find an error of authentication failure on your server when you try to log in. Generally, the error occurs when you fail to log in with the wrong user or password. If your mail server rejects the credentials you entered to the field of username or password, it will result in authentication failure.
To send the messages, the mail client uses Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). If any inappropriate authentication is detected by the server, an error message is generated. The server shows different error messages depending on the email program. In some cases, the server may not display any error messages. Some of the common reasons for SMTP error 535 authentication failed message are:
Some SMTP servers ask for a set of credentials that are different from your email account. In this way, server security can be maintained. You can contact your mail servers administrator if you need any further assistance.
Issues such as spamming and payment dues can make your account temporarily or permanently disble. A disabled account can be a reason for authentication failed message. Hence, you should ensure your account is active by checking the status of your account. Do connect with your server support team in case of any issues.
If you have authentication methods that are not supported by your mail server, there are chances to show the SMTP error. Any help would be appreciated. I've followed several forums online top no avail, their solutions have not worked for me. If you need more info regarding my env let me know. I believe I'm on the right track, just need some guidance from a redmine master ;)
Ah, by the way, there is a file called email.yml it is located at /redmine/config/. As far as I know, it is the file which you should configure your email server, not in environment.rb - but I really don't know how it works with Windows, I'm in linux.
I am currently in France and I am not able to send e-mails. When I try to send an e-mail I get the following error message "The server responded 535.5.7.8 [TPG-AO2] Authentication denied. User xxx...@tpg.com.au is banned from using SMTP Au TH due to previous abuse". Why am I getting this error message and how do I get this fixed so that I can send e-mails?
We created an article that will help us fix this with basic troubleshooting steps. Check this article Cannot Send Email Rejected by the Server/Banned from using SMTP let us know how it will go.
In the event that outgoing issues still persists shoot us a PM with your details.
Thank you for your reply. I am using an email client (Outlook) so I have tried sending emails via Post Office and this works. However this is really not a satisfactory solution, certainly not long term, as I have multiple folders set up in Outlook that I wish (need) to utilise, plus sync of address book, calendar, etc. I actually think that I know the reason that I am not able to send emails from Outlook as it has happened before when I have been overseas. The reason, as advised by TPG tecnical support, is that the TPG mail servers treat my sendings as spam and block them because they are coming from an unrecognised overseas server. On the previous two occasions that this has occurred I have been assured by TPG that the issue has been fixed and will not occur again, but apparently it has not been which is very annoying. I came through community forum to seek a solution as I am not prepared, once again, to incur very substantial international call charges whilst on lengthy hold waiting for a service technician. I very much hope that you can resolve this issue for me, or if not, give me an email address that I can use to communicate with TPG technical support.
