Hi everyone,

The national UCU ballot for strike action in defence of jobs, pay and pensions is starting this Wednesday and will be going on until 2 March. At the meeting last week we talked about getting the 'We Support our Teachers' campaign going again and using green posters, armbands etc as the campaign did during the ballot/strike at King's last year. It would be a really good way of showing staff that we support them and of getting the message out to other students that the (potential) strike is connected to the wider defence of education against cuts and fee rises.

Seeing as the ballot is starting this week, we need to get organised quickly. There's a London-wide EAN meeting at the LSE at 6pm tomorrow. It'll be a useful meeting in itself, Jim Wolfreys and Stathis Kouvelakis from King's will be speaking. We could also use it to meet up at the LSE (Quad?) beforehand (5pm?) to plan what we're doing at King's. What do people think?

Also, we decided that it would be good to hold a joint student/staff meeting as an opportunity for students to find out about the strike. I've spoken to people in UCU and we can go ahead with it this Wednesday at 1pm. They had already booked a room for this (S -2.23) so all we have to do now is build it. Please find attached a flyer, and let me know if there are any problems with it and I'll change it.

See you all soon,

Marieke

Discussion revolved around reviving the "We Support Our Teachers"
campaign to create an atmosphere that can give confidence to lecturers
as they ballot for strike action; let's bring back the fighting spirit
of November/December and win a strategy that unites students and staff
against the cuts.

We should regroup for another meeting this week - Thursday or Friday
depending on when is most convenient for a majority of us - please
RSVP to give an idea of when you are free.

Some upcoming events:

February:

02/02/11 - UCU national ballot opens!!
07/02/11 - Film Screening: South of the Border - 6pm Portuguese &
Brazilian + Hispanic Society event
08/02/11 - EAN London wide meeting - LSE 6pm
09/02/11 - UCU meeting - 1pm open forum (await confirmation)
10/02/11 - University in a neoliberal age

March:

26/03/11 - TUC March

There is some leafletting planned to build for Wednesday's staff and
student meeting - midday at the Strand, please come along if you can.

I agree that we need to plan what else we are doing at King's, I think
it would be a better idea if we did this at the end of the meeting on
Wednesday, as this will allow anyone else who comes and who is
interested in helping out to get involved. So I suggest we all go to
the meeting on Wednesday and discuss practical things we can do at the
end.

Alice
