Hi Austin,
My answers are below in red. Feel free to shoot me any follow ups.
-Are moving expenses covered if we move early (in May)? If so, is the protocol the same? Yes and yes.
-Does the firm cover trips to look for apartments in San Francisco for people living outside of the city? No. If so, what is covered and does it include expenses for spouses/significant others? N/A
-Does the firm cover shipping cars if travel to San Francisco is by air? Yes, for 1 car only.
-Can we adjust our tax withholdings prior to receiving our stipend in June? Yes, we will send you all tax forms.
-Does the "Home Finding Assistance" program apply to renters? Yes, meaning they will send you information on openings. I do not believe renters get a tour.
-If we have multiple locations for household goods pickup, does it matter if one of the locations is within 50 miles of the new residence? We will only pick-up goods from your “principal residence,” so the distance of the 2nd location is irrelevant. For example, if one location is in Boston and the other in the Marina, do the goods at the Marina location not get included in the 6,000 lb limit?
-How much do stops at additional locations typically cost? Is it just the hourly rate?“Additional locations” are not reimbursable, but you are welcome to inquire into the rates via our relocation agency and pay out of pocket for it.
-Will our Relocation Service move a piano? Yes, that's a serious question. Ha, I had some fun guessing at who has the piano. Unfortunately I can’t answer that one. It depends on whether moving the thing is “unreasonable,” which I think will depend on the circumstances. The mystery piano owner will need to work this one out directly with our relo company. If the piano is not coming from their principle residence, then it’s a non-issue anyway.
-Are the costs of all of covered expenses to be paid by us directly and then reimbursed by the firm later? Or does the firm pay these costs directly? Most of the big expenses will be booked by the relocation agency and then direct-billed to the firm, i.e. packing and shipping. Obviously there will be some things you will need to pay for out of pocket, which you will submit to the relocation agency for reimbursement.
-In the event we need to use storage during our move (need to be out of current apartment before new apartment becomes available), does the firm cover the cost of movers from current location TO storage and also FROM storage to new location in the Bay Area? Yes, both legs are covered if you use the storage arranged by the relocation agency.
-If any of the IP Lit people end up taking the Patent Bar before our start date, will the firm reimburse the costs of the test and study materials? Yes, we will reimburse the registration and materials after they take the exam. First they will need approval from two IP Share Partners. They should follow up with me if they have questions about this. If so, are there firm recommended study materials? I think people usually use PLI.
