Dear all,
Looking at the election results (see http://resultpru13.bernama.com/),
allow me to make the following comments;
- BN has operated at a
maximum capacity plus having a total advantage in the mainstream media,
yet the results are not that excellent, and not within the expectations of
even the PM himself.
- Despite BN celebrating
its winning in the GE, there is also a worrying trend for BN;
1. BN lost the share of the
popular vote. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/Triumphant-BN-seen-losing-popular-vote/
2. The Chinese tsunami factor,
whether this is temporary or will go beyond the next GE.
3. Appears that there is big rejection
of BN in Selangor where BN only managed to get just over 20% of the seats. Plus more seats lost than in 2008.
4. BN stronghold states like
Negeri Sembilan and Johor taking some big hits.
So what went
wrong for BN?
Well, the easiest answer in my view is;
- I
think the damage done by the Pak Lah administration is "deep". That has left a long lasting scar to
voters which cannot be easily undone by the present Administration. (Thus more effort needs to be done by
PM Najib).
- (Otherwise WHY the
excellent GE results for BN in 2004, then poor performance in 2008 and now
only marginal increase from 2008, right? Even Tun Daim said that mistakes
of the past need to be corrected and urge that PM Najib to be given a new mandate for that. See;
http://elections.thestar.com.my/story.aspx?file=/2013/4/27/nation/20130427192842#.UYbtgaJHK8A
Although it appears that PM Najib has made a
marginal improvement from the GE 2008 results for BN, what people may tend to overlook
is that he has managed to stop the tsunami from engulfing BN. (Imagine the
extent of the force needed to stop a tsunami?).
Remember that the Opposition leaders have told the
world that they are expecting to win in GE-13, but that did not materialize. BN
did manage to win with a simple majority plus getting back two of the states
they lost in 2008.
So BN still
has a good reason to celebrate, for now.
Salam,
Don
