The Malaysian middle class is "no pushover", and the Barisan Nasional (BN)
must seriously address its concerns such as corruption and misuse of power,
former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam told The Straits Times.

"When Malaysians are critical, it shouldn't be dismissed as them being
destructive or negative. We should respect them. The middle class today
thinks very differently, and the challenge for the leadership is that it
should be one step ahead but it has not even kept up," the Singapore daily
quoted him as saying in the republic.

"That is the problem. We (the government) have provided education to them,
but yet, we've become less educated and haven't changed our mindset," he
told The Straits Times in an interview on Thursday.

COMMENTS :

Actually, I=E2=80=99m not going to comment on what Tun Musa says. Instead I=
=E2=80=99m going
to comment on the person in general.

As a younger generation, what I see is that the older set of leaders like
Tun Musa, Tun Dr. M, Tun Daim, Tengku Razaleigh, Tan Sri Sanusi Junid are
all =E2=80=9Cintellectual heavyweights=E2=80=9D in their own right. (Oppos=
ition leaders
that fall in this category maybe would be the likes of Lim Kit Siang and
Karpal Singh).

Even though they are aged and a few of them may not be in the best of
health, they are ahead in their thinking and can reinvent themselves for
their views to be still relevant.

Even though they have long retired, what they say will still be noted with
interests by the public. Usually what they say has a strong element in
educating the public about a certain phenomena or issue. Plus there is
originality in their thinking. That is what I see.

Sadly, I think this is lacking in our present set of leaders, especially in
BN and UMNO. Very few intellectual heavyweights. Even if some of they are,
they are not talking as much as they should do.

That is what BN and UMNO would have to produce, like in the past. Without
that, the coalition won=E2=80=99t be ahead of the rakyat in their thinking.=
And
strong reliance on consultants to do the thinking on their behalf is not a
feasible option in the long run. (Might as well kita rakyat elect
consultants je jadi our leaders!).

Anyway, let me give you an example of an =E2=80=9Cintellectual heavyweight =
in the

With a stroke of a pen Rafizi has more or less made Dr Lim, who is a an
even greater intellectual heavyweight, look like a fool for criticizing
him on the titas issue!

IMHO, In the battle of managing perception, the lesson to BN & UMNO in this
issue is that, tak payah susah-susah hire an army of bloggers when it is
the leaders' job themselves (e.g. one man je, with the right qualities and
skills like Rafizi) to silence or minimise critics when confronted with an
issue. Otherwise, the issue would drag on or explode in your face..
