Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. Here's wishing all of you that are opening in December the very best. Would love to hear how the first month went for all the centers that are open.

Hi everyone...
I just submitted the lease contract to Kumon... how long from this point until they will approve?  I must have worried about it so much that I dreamed last night that the parents came to my center and told me that my center looked kinda messy.  What a dream! Huh.

Hi Supark- took 3 days for me, but it needed changes (first lease was not approved) and after re-submission, another 3 days. Altogether about 2 weeks.
Hope that helps!
Good Luck!

I've run into some zoning bottlenecks- the city has changed its mind on allowing me to function as an office and are pushing towards classifying my centre as a privete school- so I need to build a second washroom- handicapped accessible- $$$- sucks...
But otherwise all good!

Krishnan,

That is really terrible. Can you tell your field consultant and have Kumon call them and explain that this is a 2000 center franchise operation (Canada and USA), operating as a business and not a school. No other center has had to have 2 bathrooms (my city code department said the same thing to me and I was able to convince them to drop it).

They mistakenly think that the kids are there for 6-8 hours like a daycare or primary school and hence the need for 2 bathrooms. However, it is a service business operation where 10-15 students come in and leave in an hour. Try your best NOT to agree to 2 bathrooms. Otherwise they will then ask you for additional fire safety lights/alarms and strengthening of the walls etc.

Good luck. Try to get Kumon involved. Please let me know how it went.

Supark - yes, it will take 3 weeks or so. If you have a lawyer that helps with your present business, you may want to ask him to look it over also. And don't worry about the dreams :)

Thanks Bala- I will get my field team to call the city up on my behalf. I have some meetings lined up- lets see how it goes!

I am sure it will all work out, Krishnan.

On a lighter note, am attaching a picture taken during the Kumon Instructors Conference in Mexico so that the group can see the new President of KNA, Mr. Hamanaka. The other gentleman is Boris Ferrer, President of Kumon Mexico (the first and only non-Japanese President of any Kumon company worldwide). Arti was the keynote speaker and I manfully carried her bags! Spent 4 days with Hamanaka-san (since I was the only one speaking Japanese, it was unavoidable!), who has a long history with Kumon and was most recently President of Kumon Asia-Oceania. His strength is in Instruction. Will introduce you during the Las Vegas conference.

Best regards,

Bala

Hi Krishnan

I went through that same issue ( school vs office) with the city, here in Montreal. Fortunately the city agent was patient enough to look into the existing kumon centres permits. We found that there is another class of businesses ( specialized education institutions such as driving schools ) and they do not have the those stringent requirements of schools.
