Hellloooo Everyone,

It has been a very long time I have not heard from anyone????? But then I have been busy tooo.

I opened first of November and have been very busy since. It feels great but the work never stops and have to keep up with the work sheets as well. I have an I level Math enrollment so any free moment I get, I am doing I level Math.

Questions for all....
  • Did everyone  open or is close to opening? How was the experience??
  • Anyone do their grand opening.... Please share your experience.
  • What is your Kumon Field Associate's input in your day to day business?
  • Any one given G,H,I Level tests in Math and Reading?
  • Are you guys closing for winter break?

I also want to wish all of you great and prosperous year ahead.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Rgds

Hi Mini- thanks for taking the time to write- must be ridiculously busy for you!

My building permit got finally approved today- It was little bit of a battle as the city were unwilling to let me have just 1 washroom as it affects handicapped access- so they were insisting that I needed a second one that is handicapped accessible! I got lucky- finally, today- but I am not holding my breath- till they come and finally sign off on the CO.

I am opening the 16th of Jan, so not really rushing to finish my F and G for Math and E and F levels for reading- just doing it little at a time.

I have a really good Kumon Field Associate- His input has been positive and we seem to agree a lot (That always makes me happy!).

No tests yet for me. And I am not open till Jan- so yes, closed for the holidays!

Just interviewed for assistants today- overqualified pool- too many people with advanced degrees!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Cheers
Krishnan

Good to hear from you. I finally signed my franchise agreement and got my discovery day done. After choosing a place initially, I switched to a better location and a better landlord.
It was difficult waiting, since the landlord had to get permission from Bed Bath and Beyond and Barnes and Noble. Finally got approval from them and am set to go.
Right now we are in beautiful Miami enjoying the weather. Once we get back, I am going to get the permits etc and get the work done. Am hoping to open in Feb. I havea wonderful field officer. She is extremely helpful and patient with all the changes I keep asking her to do.
Good luck toeveryone in 2012.

My husband asked if everyone could help start developing a bulleted list of center policies?

Thanks
Ayesha

Hi everyone,

First, I would like to wish you all happy holidays and a great New
Year. I hope that your first year becomes a very successful yer :)

As you know, I started my center about two months ago. The first month
was fine but december has been really slow. I almost lost one 5 year
old kid because I trusted my assistant too much and she did not tell
me the details about the kids progress and paid less attention to her.
However, I wa sable to get her back because she likes me very much and
I was able to talk the student back into staying...Pooouuuuffff,
relief :) I learned that I should always do the final checks even on
Pull & Prep to make sure that assistants don't make mistakes and give
the wrong levels (it happened twice already) but I now, I am getting
better and know how to observe students AND assistants.

I have a 14 year old too that wanted to quit because his friend
enrolled and he is in a higher level G but I gave a great speech and
pumped him so much that he is really working hard now :)

Btw, I don't know if you remember but I wanted to start a movie time
for the kids every quarter. I bought a projector and speakers and
created my mocie theater in the center. It looks really cool. So, I
started it already and played a couple of Xmas movies last saturday
morning (two movies, one for younger kids and one for the older ones).
I told the kids that they can bring a friend as well (sales pitch, you
know). The kids loved it and really into Kumon now :) I think, I will
continue it even when I have (hopefully) 200 kids although it would be
a big job.

I will have my Grand opening in February or March. I am preparing for
it right now. I will do some extensive advertising as well.....costly
though :(

Hope to see you all very soon and again..Good Luck in the New Year :)

btw, I have a facebook page. The link is below:

Happy Holidays everyone....
I just got approval on the lease contract, finally! Things seem to move slower than I would like it to be. I don't know how long from this point.  I am trying not to worry too much.

@Ben...
Your center looks really nice.  Can you tell me exactly what happened and how you talk to the boy that wanted to quit?

Hi Supark,

One thing that I realized during my conversations with my branch
person is that I should always give the difficult kids a pre-test on
the upcoming level when they do their achievement tests. For example,
a level B pre-test when they finish level A. At least, I should do
that for the levels that seem easier and are certainly below their
school level. This would give me a point of reference and comparison
between levels and will give me the opportunity to show the kids that
they are improving. I used this method on this student of mine and it
worked. I showed him that he was improving but this is how I
approached it.

I aksed him why he wanted to quit but wanted to know the real reason
and not just a way out. I found out that another one of my kids is his
friend and he was embarrassed about his low level in Math and did not
want his friend to know. I told him that none of the kids would talk
about their levels in my center and I promised to put his friend in a
different corner. But I also asked him if he would quit playing games
if his friend was better than him in Halo (a computer game) and would
never play the game again or if he would quit asking girls out if one
says NO to him :D Then I showed him his tests and he saw that he had
improved in each and every level that he had completed (3 levels in
about a month and a bit - he does 20 pages a day) and then I told him
that he is really good and I consider him a person capable of
advancing very quickly and even passing his friend if he is willing to
do it. I told him the only thing he should quit is QUITTING :D

Oh, btw, all my kids at the center get the sticker passport (available
on KStore) and get stickers. When they complete one page, they get a
small gift which takes a bout three months to complete for a 5-6$
gift. This boy has his eyes on a Canadiens Hockey Puck and that was a
very good bait I used to keep him in the center as well :D

Take care and good luck !

Supark,

Go to ikumon and search for Operations Manual (I suggest you download in your computer for reference). On page 53, there is a section on Center Design and a link to the Center Design Guidelines. Save this file too and you can see all the decor guidelines (paint, signage, window graphics, carpet etc).

In Facebook, do a search for Kumon of   Bordentown and you will find Mini's center. While you are in Facebook, search for Kumon Bartlett TN and
Like my page too!

Cheers!
