Hi Supark,
One thing that I realized during my conversations with my branch
person is that I should always give the difficult kids a pre-test on
the upcoming level when they do their achievement tests. For example,
a level B pre-test when they finish level A. At least, I should do
that for the levels that seem easier and are certainly below their
school level. This would give me a point of reference and comparison
between levels and will give me the opportunity to show the kids that
they are improving. I used this method on this student of mine and it
worked. I showed him that he was improving but this is how I
approached it.
I aksed him why he wanted to quit but wanted to know the real reason
and not just a way out. I found out that another one of my kids is his
friend and he was embarrassed about his low level in Math and did not
want his friend to know. I told him that none of the kids would talk
about their levels in my center and I promised to put his friend in a
different corner. But I also asked him if he would quit playing games
if his friend was better than him in Halo (a computer game) and would
never play the game again or if he would quit asking girls out if one
says NO to him :D Then I showed him his tests and he saw that he had
improved in each and every level that he had completed (3 levels in
about a month and a bit - he does 20 pages a day) and then I told him
that he is really good and I consider him a person capable of
advancing very quickly and even passing his friend if he is willing to
do it. I told him the only thing he should quit is QUITTING :D
Oh, btw, all my kids at the center get the sticker passport (available
on KStore) and get stickers. When they complete one page, they get a
small gift which takes a bout three months to complete for a 5-6$
gift. This boy has his eyes on a Canadiens Hockey Puck and that was a
very good bait I used to keep him in the center as well :D
Take care and good luck !
