On Monday, Ozaki-san and Peter Tu visited our Collierville center and we spent the whole of yesterday learning from them. Ozaki-san spent 30 years in Japan working with Toru Kumon and is responsible for the big push towards better Observation and Primary Instruction. It was like sitting at the feet of a "guru"!!!

He wanted to see the video produced by our bank and at the risk of embarrassing myself, I am attaching it herewith too. Try to keep your laughter to a minimum!!

Jane asked me about our Payroll and I promised to share my file with her, but thought it might be useful for others in the group. I have created a format like the one I use. Please do consult with your CPA and see if you find it better to get them to do it or use a payroll service or through QuickBooks etc. In Tennessee, we do not have a state income tax, so the deductions are simpler, but your state may have a state income tax. So, this form will have to be modified.

We use a payroll time card machine which gives you the cumulative total hours worked for the month (but we have to physically add the hours for the 2 centers) and plug in the hours into the spreadsheet and hand write the checks. Every month, I pay FICA online and every quarter I create a Federal Income Tax report and SUTA report and file it with the appropriate taxes. At the end of the year, you have to file a FUTA return too. In addition, there are local Business Licence and Business Tax Reports etc. All of this can be very time consuming and not everyone will be comfortable doing it. You have to be very well organized and if you are late filing anything, you will be assessed interest and penalty!

This is just how I have been doing it for years and never felt the need to change! I do all the accounting on QuickBooks and enter all tuition checks on a spreadsheet. I am definitely NOT recommending it, so please discuss with your CPA and find the best way for you.

Best regards,

Bala
