The songwriting team Jay Livingston and Ray Evans wrote a new
Christmas song for a movie, and originally began the chorus with a
phrase that described the sound made by the little Christmas bells
heard all over New York City. But when they played the song for
Ray's wife, she burst out in laughter upon hearing the chorus,
"Tinkle bells, tinkle bells . . . " and pointed out that "tinkle"
does have a slang meaning, especially to toddlers and parent of
toddlers. So Ray crossed out "tinkle" and wrote "silver."
This duo also gave the world "Que Sera Sera" and the immortal theme
from "Mister Ed."
