Peace On Earth Candle Light Vigil

to End the Afghan War,

tomorrow,

Wednesday, December 2nd

6:30-7:30pm

at the J.C. Nichols Fountain, 47th and Main, KCMO

in response to President Obama’s plan to escalate the Afghan war

Dear Peacemaker,

Tonight President Obama announced that he is deploying an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan increasing troops there to 100,000.

We had hope that, along with the majority of the citizens of the United States, the President would also recognize that there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan. Unfortunately this is not the case.

In response to Obama’s escalation in Afghanistan, we invite you to a Peace On Earth Candle Light Vigil to End the Afghan War, tomorrow Wednesday, December 2nd from 6:30-7:30pm at the J.C. Nichols Fountain, 47th and Main, KCMO. The event will include candlelight processions through the Country Club Plaza, music, speakers and signs. A program will take place at 7:00pm.

Music will include “The Recipe.” Speakers will include Chaplin (Maj) Robert E. Francis, U.S. Army Retired; Richard Mabion, founder of Building a Sustainable Earth Community; Sr. Jeanne Christianson, Justice Coordinator for Sisters of Mercy, West Midwest Community; and Judy Morgan, retired teacher and counselor.

This vigil is part of the nationwide vigils and protests responding to President Obama’s escalation of the Afghan war.

This vigil challenges the premise that more war will bring peace. Greater peace and stability in Afghanistan will only come with the withdrawal of U.S. and other foreign forces; increased diplomacy with all parties to the conflict; and increased humanitarian and development aid for civilian aid groups in Afghanistan (one of the poorest nations in the world).

The event is sponsored by American Friends Service Committee and the KC Iraq Task Force.

Please join us and forward this email on to others!

Also you are invited to a Thursday evening Conference Call  Briefing on Afghanistan with Phyllis Bennis (Institute for Policy Studies) and American Friends Service Committee staff (See below.)

Thanks for your commitment to peace.

Sincerely,

Ira Harritt
