U.S. 69 Highway Expansion and Potential Toll Lane
Officials are looking to expand U.S. 69 to three lanes each direction from 103rd St. to 179th St. as a way to reduce congestion, improve travel time and safety.
Funding of the estimated $300 million project is part of the community discussion. The new third lane could possibly be an express toll lane, without toll booths. Funds from the tolls would be considered part of the City's contribution to the project. The other two existing lanes in each direction would not be toll lanes. Part of community engagement process is to seek public input and gauge support on a toll lane in each direction. No decision has been made on funding options.
KDOT officials are available to present to neighborhood groups, businesses, social organizations and more.
For additional information on the possible project, including results from a statically valid survey, please visit www.69express.org.
Attending public meetings is the best way to stay informed and make your voice heard. The next public meeting is scheduled for April 2021. To watch a recording of the Jan. 20 meeting, please click here. Sign up for Project updates to be notified of upcoming events.

Unemployment Claim Fraud Due to Identity Theft Is On the Rise
Like states all across the country, Kansas is seeing an increase in reports of unemployment claim fraud due to identify theft.
Fraudulent claims are being filed using the names and personal information of people who have not lost their jobs. People are often unaware a claim has been made on their behalf until they receive a determination notice in the mail from KDOL or until their employer receives a notice to verify the employee's status.
If you suspect a claim has been improperly filed using your identity or your employees' identity, please let Kansas Department of Labor know by clicking the button below. KDOL will investigate your claim, suspend the fraudulent account if suspicious activity is found and refer the matter over to law enforcement for action.
For more information, and/or to report a fraudulent claim, please visit the Kansas Department of Labor website, or call the Fraud Hotline at (785) 291-6059.

IRS Releases Tax Security Awareness and Other Tax Season Items

Key points:
- Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program: The IRS expanded the Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program to all taxpayers who can verify their identities. The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit code known only to the taxpayer and to the IRS. It helps prevent identity thieves from filing fraudulent tax returns using a taxpayers' personally identifiable information.
- Identity theft involving unemployment benefits: Taxpayers who receive Forms 1099-G for unemployment benefits they did not actually get because of identity theft should request a corrected form from their appropriate state agency. Taxpayers should file an accurate return including the income they actually received.
- Choose a preparer wisely: Most tax return preparers provide outstanding service. The IRS urges taxpayers to check their tax return preparer's qualifications and history. Choose wisely because you are responsible for all the information on your income tax return.
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program: offers free tax help to individuals who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and individuals with limited English proficiency who need assistance in preparing their taxes. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program also offers free tax help to taxpayers, particularly those age 60 and older.
