Noticed a Amtrak "cabbage car" on the end of trains 311 & 316 this past
weekend (March 28-29). Conductor on Saturday's train 316 radioed Traffic
Control about it like he had never seen one assigned to this run before. Is
this something new, being used for baggage and possibly express?

It's just a neutered control car so they can operate push/pull. The
Wolverine runs with a cabbage car on the Chicago end and the actual
power on the Pontiac end . At least that was the configuration when i
rode from Pontiac to Chicago last winter. No need to wye the train and
it doesn't tie up two locomotives as it would without the cabbage
car.

It does give them more room for express - i understand it's a lousy
rider for the engineer - too light to ride right since it's just an
empty shell.
