Despite the heat, Bettie Franklin and the ever-faithful Debra Lea came
to knit shawls last night. Debra has a few inches left to knit on her
shawl for Maureen at Wal-Mart. Debra didn't bring it, since she shawl
is close to completion and would be a hot pile of knitting on her lap
(instead of spread out on her couch while knitting). I know Maureen
will be thrilled and blessed by this wonderful shawl.

Bettie has also been working on a knitted stole for her daughter,
who's a UCC minister. This is a wonderful idea -- I've seen stoles
that were woven and sewn and embroidered ones. I've thought about
knitting them but was unsure about how it'd turn out. I hope to see
Bettie's stole or at least a photo to see it. Again, think how
blessed Bettie's daughter will be by this! If you're not sure what a
stole looks like, look at this link -- http://www.almy.com/qsvestments.html
The stole is the long narrow colored fabric that is hung around the
neck. In some faith traditions, the color of this changes with the
liturgical season (white for Christmas or weddings, green for Ordinary
time, purple for Lent, purple or light blue for Advent, Red for
Pentecost, etc.). Probably more info than you wanted, but that's what
happens when you have a librarian at your service! There are also
some interesting theories about how the stole may have been adopted
from the Jewish prayer shawl tradition. If anyone is interested in a
link to that, let me know.

Bettie's pacemaker is being replaced today, and I'm sure she'd
appreciate your prayers for a successful surgery and a speedy
recovery.

cheers-

I'd love that link, Laura Gayle. Have we heard how Bettie is
recovering? Debra
