Anyway, what I was thinking was...
why do prayer shawls have to be...well, shawls?
yesterday, I finished a hat for a friend of friend's mother, someone I
don't know and will probably never meet. She is going through chemo,
and is starting to lose her hair. My friend brought me some rather
inexpensive (OK cheap, I have turned into such a yarn snob!) eyelash
that the lady just "loved" and I knitted it into the cuff of some
lovely soft wool/silk blend. I am sure that this woman will like her
hat, and feel good that someone who does not know her was thinking of
her.
Earlier this month, I finished a short row scarf made out out of Noro
Silk Garden, playing around with width until every triangle was all
one colorway. The women I made if for is in my water aerobics class
and lost her mother earlier this summer. She is the marketing
director for Hall's, and I knew that a shawl just wouldn't be her
style. She loved it, and by sheer chance (or Someone's design) I gave
it to her on her mother's birthday.
I am pondering this all BECAUSE....
I spent last Thursday at the Studio (when no prayer shawl makers
showed up) sorting through stash yarn that was left after the Fiber
Fest October 7. There is some great stuff there, not all of it shawl
weight and none of the skeins enough for a whole shawl. But with some
creative knitting outside the "shawl box", I bet we could make some
stylish items for House of Menuha Pioneer Program participants...and
that would make them feel good.
Right now, the yarn is sorted by weight into two sacks behind the
office door. By the end of this week, it will be in its own little
tub, marked prayer shawl ministry and on a shelf in the basement. be
sure to stop by and pick some yarn out.
Oh, and if you still want to make shawls, that's good too. Check out
some of the fun yarns for decorating edges or fancying up the fringe.
