Move over, Bollywood. India’s new fashion trendsetter is Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For a visit to a Hindu temple in Katmandu on Monday, Mr. Modi donned a saffron kurta with a red-and-orange paisley shawl folded and draped elegantly over his shoulder.
Earlier on his Nepal visit, Mr. Modi went for contrast: a sky blue waistcoat over a gold kurta and crisp white leggings.
When the 63-year-old leader of the world’s largest democracy was in Brazil for last month’s Brics summit, he wore a sedate brown suit with a mandarin collar, but livened it up with a jaunty red-and-green ikat silk pocket square.
Mr. Modi opted for an ice-blue vest over a grey kurta made from Matka silk — a rough Indian handloom — for his first visit as prime minster to the conflict-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir in July.
In the capital, he went for a more classic look: starched churidar trousers and a cream-colored kurta.
When India’s new prime minister met regional South Asian leaders in May, he chose warm earth tones, a brown vest over a tan-colored kurta.
