A 46-year-old Los Angeles man named Matthew Moore has a disorder that is not politically correct.
That disorder is homosexuality.
Well, that’s how his doctor classifies it, anyway. The phrase “homosexual behavior” is listed on his medical records as a “chronic problem” after a routine exam in April, 2013.
Moore didn’t like the idea that his habit of perving with other guys was listed as a “chronic problem” so he decided to confront the doctor, Elaine Jones.
Having problems with a female doctor? He must be a misogynist.
Jones explained that doctors go “back and forth” about how they classify homosexuality.
Indeed, at one point, homosexuality was classified as a sociopathic personality disturbance. But, in 1974, that classification was summarily removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Even if we accept the dubious premise that homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder based purely on scientific principles, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t risky behavior for one’s physical health.
Gay men are still among the most likely to contract HIV. That’s a statistical fact.
Any doctor who cares about his or her patient’s health will advise men not to be gay based purely on the numbers.
Facts are stubborn things, and all that.
But Matthew Moore is stubborn as well. He’s suing his doctor for the classification.
This will be an interesting one to watch.
