The Malaysian Examination System: The Good, the Bad and the Alternatives

We are conducting this survey as part of our group project for Academic Writing. Having the title ‘The Malaysian Examination System: The Good, the Bad and the Alternatives’, we are aiming to obtain feedbacks from our peers as well as lecturers on the effectiveness of the Malaysian examination system. It would be a great help if you can help us answer the questions below. Thank you for spending your time and cooperation in answering our questionnaire.

Cannot plagiarise the work of others
Healthy competition among peers
Obtaining good grades = passport to employment
Recognise individual achievement and school accountability
Student's work is more reliable

Children: Robotic (spoonfed + can’t think outside box)
Not a fair measure of ability
Study to get credit, not interest. Impractical, burdensome, fail to reflect ability
Achievements tend to be only measured through the number of A’s or F’s
Stressed exams only FOR learning not OF learning

Less marking compared to assignments
Less time needed to know students’ capabilities. Can know through exams
Can know effectiveness of teaching strategies through exams

Cannot identify students understanding
Only focus on limited topics to ensure students pass exam
National exam – people become too exam-oriented
