Dear Friends,

Greetings from Gramvikas and Rupayaan!

Hope you are keeping well and your loved ones are all healthy and safe.

These are very difficult times for us with the continuing COVID pandemic and the regulatory pressures on CSOs, the latest being the uncertainties of the FCRA and IT-related renewals that most of us are facing. This situation will likely continue in the foreseeable future.  We have all tried in different ways to cope with this crisis at the level of our respective organisations. However, we have not been able to mount a robust response, as a sector, to many of these challenges. In addition to the challenges, there is a pressing need to create a positive public narrative, ensure continued funding support, research our sector better and critically engage with the government on policy issues.

In light of this, National Foundation for India (NFI) and the Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy (CSIP) have been doing a series of convenings of sector leaders across the country to explore the way forward. To date, regional/state convenings have been completed with CSOs of North-East states, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The following are the top suggestions made by CSOs through such convenings:

1) The sector needs to organise itself and form an industry association that can voice the concerns of CSOs and engage in advocacy and policy-making for the betterment of civil society

2) The industry association should generate/publish knowledge materials about the sector (viz., size, contributions, challenges, innovations, etc.)

3) The industry association should provide capacity-building solutions in key functions of running a CSO (viz., legal, technology, fundraising, talent management, communications, M&E, etc.)

4) The industry association build a platform for CSOs to engage with each other and stakeholders like media, academic institutions, funding entities, government, corporates, etc.

5) The industry association should take the lead in improving public perception of the sector by driving compelling narratives.

Gramvikas and Rupayaan are organising the consultation meeting with CSO leaders from the state of Odisha in collaboration with NFI and CSIP.

This is a space for all of us to collectively reflect on the way forward. We have scheduled the consultation for February 17 from 3 PM – 4.30 PM.

Kindly follow the Zoom meeting link to register and join the meeting.

I would be grateful if you could please drop me a line for confirmation.

In Solidarity

Sameet
