A very nice step taken by the Odisha and Indian govt. I hope there will be couple of Santali Colleges and at-least one Santali University. Congratulation to the Santali community. Please make an effort to establish a Santali Sahitya Academy.

Dear Mr. Karmee,

Thanks for the posting of this news item.
I am glad that the Govt. has taken this positive and politically correct decision. The Santhali language will show the way for all other tribal languages and dialects. Let there be a proper policy regarding the tribal languages to deal with the following:

  1. Teaching and Learning in Mother Tongue of all tribal children from pre-primary stage.
  2. Development of Teaching-Learning Materials in Tribal Languages
  3. Support to all tribal languages for Research and Development
  4. Resource and Training Centre for non-tribals to learn and speak tribal languages and dialects
  5. Link up Tribal Development with Tribal Language and Culture.
As you all know, by the impact of Globalisation, many languages of the Indigenous people are vanishing from the world. We should launch an all out effort to arrest this process.

Dear Shri Das,

I agree with the points raised by you. However, I do not think only globalization is responsible for extinction of languages. My observation is that the people involved in the development and research of mainstream languages of India are largely responsible for this. The multilingual education program is a recent event in India. Dr. MK Mishra has done lot of research on multilingual education in Odisha: http://www.nmrc-jnu.org/nmrc_img/Orissa-%20MLE%20status%20report.pdf

Because of the love and affection for mainstream languages; few people and groups are blocking the development of tribal and other Indian languages. People who were shouting only “Odia in Odisha” should support this move whole heatedly. I hope very soon Odisha will recognize Santali, Kosli and other languages as its official language.

Best regards,

Sanjib

Thanks, Mr. Karmi for your prompt response.

I know what Dr. Mahendra Mishra is doing and I agree that the approach to multi-lingual education is a correct approach.

However, on globalisation and its impact on languages, let us agree to disagree. Many studies across the globe have indicated how local languages are threatened by the dominant languages which market understands. Many languages and dialects are already extinct and more are on the verge of extinction. .  Our Odia language is also threatened already as there has been over-emphasis on English and English Medium Schools.

This is just a fear psychosis created by few people. There is not much confrontation of English with Odia.

Odia literature is declining. Now a day’s even plagiarized books are getting Sahitya Academy award.

We can't stop opening of English and Hindi medium schools. We should not be worried about it.

Best regards,
Sanjib
