Dear friends of Rethink Aadhaar,
We are writing to you because we are deeply concerned by the Election Commission of India’s recent proposal to link voter ID cards and Aadhaar, reported in the Indian Express https://indianexpress.com/article/india/govt-writes-to-uidai-seeks-aadhaar-use-for-new-voters-7443720/ .
This is not the first time the Election Commission has mooted such an idea, but it was shot down by the Supreme Court in 2015. In 2019, Rethink Aadhaar and 200 organisations and citizens had made a representation to the ECI to ask them to strike down any such plans: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/58b545dc59cc68c59cb75b8e/t/5d39bb746a0a810001430652/1564064629183/Letter+to+ECI+regarding+Delhi+High+Court+notice+on+Aadhaar-voter+ID+linking.pdf.
The current proposal is being pushed without a law, and is likely to be smuggled under the guise of the Aadhaar Good Governance Rules, which are in themselves a violation of the law laid down in Puttaswamy II.
In response, Rethink Aadhaar, Article 21 Trust and others have prepared a statement presenting our concerns and arguments against the linking exercise. You can read our statement here.
