Thanks to the incredible leadership of local communities, last week the Provincial Court in Imbabura, Ecuador, revoked the license for a large-scale copper mining project in Intag Valley, ruling that the project violated both the rights of nature and the rights of the local communities to consultation. This is a huge win for nature and people!
For decades, local communities from Intag Valley have defended their homes, livelihoods and the critical ecosystems in which they live from mining. The Llurimagua mining project posed significant danger for the Intag-Toisan Key Biodiversity Area, which is an important place for the overall health of the planet and critical for the persistence of biodiversity on Earth.
Intag Valley is part of the Tropical Andes, a biodiversity hotspot that harbors a special kind of classification of tropical forests called cloud forests--and an incredibly biodiverse community of wildlife. This includes Intag’s rediscovered Longnose Harlequin Toad, a Critically Endangered species, and the newly discovered Intag’s Resistance Rocket Frog.
