Beginning with ETABS 2015 v15.1.0, the file ETABSTran2013.exe is no longer included in the installation due to requirements set out by Microsoft for their Windows 8.1 Desktop App Certification Program. ETABS 2013 and ETABS 2015 v15.0.0 are not affected by this.

If you have an older ETABS v9 model file (*.edb) that you would like to open in ETABS 2016 v16.0.0 or later, please do the following to open the file. This places the translator into the installation directory such that old models can be open directly from within ETABS 2016 v16.0.0 or later. Please follow these steps.

Hello Experts,
I made a model of simple framed structure using ETABS. After exporting it into the IFC file (Structural Analysis view), I found that there is no any information related to the geometry of the elements.
I want to know that it is possible to put geometrical data information in Structural Analysis view of an IFC file?
Thanks and Regards
Jaspreet Kaur

Hello,
I Had also worked with ETABS and exported IFC file (both 2*3 and 4) to get structural analysis view.
Well ETABS exported structural analysis in IFC files it can be easily view and check in notepad and compare it with IFC standard . BUT we can only check files in text viewer as per my research.
No bim viewer and software shown us what was in ifc file in GUI mode. so thats why jaspreet you were not able to view in these viewers .

Ive also been looking at this and have not been able to find a viewer which displays results - I would be very interested to hear how you get on. If you do make contact with any of the software vendors would you mind posting the details here? I would be happy to follow up as well - requests are likely to get more weight if multiple parties are asking for the same thing.

I contacted Auto desk, Bentley on their forums. They are not having a
viewer or software which can help us to view structural analysis data.
In reality they are not having any software which can export analysis
data to IFC file. So it is clear from this line that if no export then
no import too.

The free treeviewer allows you to explore the structural analysis data with no geometry. Rhino importer can visualise the model and also provided are translators to convert the model to robot, ism, sap2000, etabs and several other applications. I recall sap2000, stabs, Sofistik and spacegass all have their own importer out of the box.

Hi all,
We are working on an open-source structural analysis workflow with the structural ifc entities and the use of Code_Aster, a finite element solver developed by EDF.
The IFC authoring will be done with BlenderBIM and we have a public repository ( ) for the scripts needed to apply the workflow with Code_Aster.

To support this project I am developing a web-based model viewer specific for the structural ifc entities, model etc., which will be completely free to use online. I will post again when the viewer will be online. Maybe it can be of use for the people in this thread.

@Tandeep Could I please use the building model that you uploaded as a test case in the ifc2ca project (it means have an example based on this file which will be publicly accessible)?? Thank you in advance

The Ifc-To-Code_Aster project ( ) is progressing and we have released a web structural BIM viewer to facilitate the conversion of IFC structural models to JSON for configuring and running analyses with Code_Aster.

Awesome one.
I will try to available more complex models to you today as i want to check will they work here or not.
I think this script will be able to show steel bars reinforcement also. But dont know will it work for load cases and applied load on buildings.
Meet you soon with new models for testing.

FEMtools Framework is a multi-functional environment for advanced engineering application development, integration, and automation. The framework includes data interfaces, database management utilities, mesh generation and manipulation tools, parameter and response management, state-of-the-art data visualization, plus a full featured scripting language and API function library.

Optionally, FEMtools Framework includes a standard finite element library and solvers for linear static and normal modes analysis. Extended analysis functionality is available inFEMtools Dynamics. Alternatively, standard external solvers like ABAQUS, ANSYS, MSC.Nastran, NX Nastran, LS-DYNA, SAP2000 or in-house solvers can easily be integrated and piloted as part of larger analysis processes.

This open and flexible CAE application development platform is used by analysts to integrate their tools, and create vertical applications that meet the specific requirements of an industry. A unique capability of FEMtools Framework is the integration of data resulting from experimental static or dynamic testing.

FEMtools Framework is used by Dynamic Design Solutions for the development of its dedicated tools like test planning, FE-test correlation, model updating, add-ons and utilities. Furthermore, a growing number of customers and development partners are working on integrating their existing tools or developing entirely new tools that exploit the framework infrastructure and re-usable components. This is a more efficient approach than developing new applications from the ground-up. Some examples of development projects by customers and partners are integration of acoustics solvers, fluid-structure interaction solvers, modal analysis automation, custom test planning, substructure synthesis, and vibration-based material identification.

FEMtools Framework is a software-neutral CAE application development tool mainly used for developing tools that exploit hybrid test and analysis databases. It provides the foundation for allFEMtools products and forproducts developed by independent partners.

FEMtools Framework is an open program that can be naturally integrated in an existing CAE environment. Two-directional translators are available with the most popular FEA and test database formats (ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, NASTRAN, Universal File, ...) and with other popular software like MS Excel, and MATLAB. These translators are direct and are integrated with no limitation of FE model size. New interfaces can be developed using the FEMtools scripting language.

Interface programs import external databases into a relational database of tables. FEMtools Framework provides a number of utilities for interactive definition, editing and transformation of all data in the internal database:

A function library is available to generate surface meshes and volume meshes. Unstructured surface meshes can be generated for generic surface patches that are defined using simple geometry description (vertex, curve, surface). Volume meshes are obtained from 2D meshes with operations like extrusion and revolving.

This FEMtools API function library complements the lattice-based mesh deformation ('morphing') and provides the functionality to mesh very complex geometries. It can be used for applications like parametric meshing for shape optimization, meshing design spaces for topology optimization or to implement mesh coarsening and refinement tools

Mesh quality analysis tools verify the quality of imported or generated finite element meshes. Quality metrics like aspect ratio, convexity, taper, warp angle and others can be computed on the fly and visualized with color-coded mesh graphics. Results can be further post-processed by computing histograms or sorting mesh quality values. Additional mesh quality metrics can be implemented using the FEMtools Script programming language.

If the FEMtools database contains the complete FE model description, the user can import externally computed mass and stiffness matrices, static displacement, normal modes, complex modes or operational shapes. Alternatively, the built-in element library and solvers can be used. Piloting external standard solvers like MSC.Nastran and ANSYS is completely automated using driver scripts.

Finite element and solver components can be separately licensed for integration in third party products that address specific needs for various applications and industries. For examples of commercially available third party products based on FEMtools Framework seedeveloper partners.

FEMtools Framework provides commands and functions for definition of parameters and responses. Parameters are physical element properties that can be used as variables for sensitivity analysis, design optimization or model updating applications. The definition can be based on the existing property cards, for example the common material property of a set of elements. Alternatively, element sets can be defined by filters, graphical picking or Boolean operators. FEMtools manages the property cards and removes the hassle of manually creating new property cards as new element sets are created.

FEMtools is operated via a customizable menu interface, the FEMtools command language and FEMtools scripting. The menu interface is most suitable if you are a new or occasional user, if you need to edit tables or display graphics. You can browse through the different menus to get a overview of the features and easily experiment with different commands. The FEMtools command language is for more experienced users who prefer to type commands in the entry field of the console window or use command scripts. This mode is often the fastest way to complete standard procedures, or run your own scripts. Once a procedure becomes more complex, needs to be developed or repeated often with only small changes, using FEMtools scripting language is the most suitable approach.
