For all you chaps that have upgraded bits and pieces on your bikes
could we have a recomended Upgrade / Mod section please?

I know there's a section for spare parts but that doesn't comment on
how good / bad or indiffernt the bits were.

Mod type chaps is this possible here at google (thinking space rather
than anything else)?

I hope I have made sense here.

Good Afternoon everyone,
Mav's request is a good one so I have made this thread sticky which
means it will always be at the top of the page. I will kick things
off.

The modifications I have made to the Black Beast are:

Scott Oiler - initially a single injector but now upgraded to a dual
injector;
Hella FF50 spot lights;
Top Box - initially a Kappa setup but now Hepco & Becker;
Fender Extender;
Hugger - now removed as I fit a larger profile rear tyre;
Starcom1 - so I can listen to my audio books on my PDA through the
speakers in my helmet;
Crash Bars - they have been very useful as tie down points for my tank
bag. I've never tested them in a crash;

Regards

My mods are very modest, so far. May '06 Black er5 with Renntec sports
rack and new Renntec tailpack designed especially for the rack, plus
Beowulf Radiator Grill. Pugi tinted flyscreen. Handlebar mounted
time-clock. Thinking about braided hoses after reading about them on
this site.
Rob C > is your hugger up for sale??

Excellent video.

Dean, I suppose I ought to sell my hugger as it is just taking up space
in my garage. It is black and has a few marks where it rubbed against
the rear shock spring but nothing serious.

Make me an offer. Where do you live? We might be able to meet up for
the exhange.

A Fly Screen

Fender Extender
Braided Brake Hose (get one!)

All I can think of at the moment?
Where did you get the Radiator grill? Is it any good? Just interested?

Cheers

Hi
I went for the very small rectangular digital clock "Daytona" brand
from H.Gericke. It's also in the M&p catalogue.
It sits perfectly between the two handlebar clamps and is easy to read.
It holds on via a strong velcro strip which enables you to remove it
when parked up. It has not come off in 2000 miles. Price around £9.
Ride safe, Dean.

Hello People,
One mod, i've not seen listed here is exhausts.
Last Spring my standard exhaust gave up the ghost and after a fair bit
of hunting around i found a Motad for a little over 200 quids.
I found that it was probably the only aftermarket system around for the
ER5, so it all came down to the price in the end. There don't seem to
be any apparent performance benefits from fitting the Motad except,
unlike some systems I've fitted to other bikes, the system was a good
fit and the bike has run fairly well with the system, the only drawback
is that the exhaust note seems a little flat, but then, if the exhaust
note was a major issue, then i'd buy a Ducati wouldn't I?
Also the choke cable has broken twice on mine and after paying a tenner
for new ones, my eye was drawn to a Honda Superdream cable that was
languishing on a shelf in my workshop, Et Voila! a perfect fit
although it now lives on the top yoke instead of the Bars.
Any port in a storm!
While i'm ranting....
Some time ago I asked the Users of this Forum for advice on sprocket
kits.
Everyone advised against Budget Kits, but being a cheapskate I bought a
set anyway and I have to say
"You were right and I was wrong" Avoid them at all costs, they are half
the price but twice the hassle, so beware and don't be a Wally like me,
follow the advice offered by the Learned Users of this Forum!
Yours, Paul

Is the exhaust louder than standard?

I would love to turn up the volume a little (but still be legal)

I had a motad system on my ER5, installed when the "quality" original rotted
away in no time at all. As you say, I had no problems with it at all, doesn't
really effect anything and the exhaust note is only different if you are
really listening out for it. Big advantage of course is that it has stainless
downpipes and not too bad for the money! (think mine was about ?180 but
that was a couple of years ago.) IMHO looked better too which I suspect
is why I got a reasonable price! Sold the bike before the motad had a chance
to prove itself against the elements though so make sure you post up a progress
report after the winter!

Steven

Hi There,

I'm not one to generally jump into a conversation as most people on this
forum seem to be able to give a better answer quicker than i can manage -
however the cheapskate comment rung a bell with me - although to be fair I
am more skint than a cheapskate! - but I digress...

A few months ago i had to replace my standard exhaust due to the foot long
hole that had appeared on the seam at the bottom of mine, being in my usual
state of financial woe, I was quite keen to find myself a deal that didn't
empty mt last 200 quid out of my savings account...

The rather fantastic solution that i came up with was to go to my local bike
exhaust shop and ask them if they had any second hand stuff that had been
left after they had fitted a new system, to be fair i did get a hand on the
chin and an intake of breath from the very nice man at the shop but he did
go and have a look 'upstairs' to see if there was anything lying about

imagine my joy when after 5 minutes of crashing and banging later the
gentleman re-appeared brandishing a stubby motad, allgleaming and silver and
about half the length of the stock exhaust that we all know and love, trying
to contain my excitement I asked how much he was after for said system, i
managed to not take his arm when he said that all he wanted was 20 quid for
the can and wasn't at all dissapointed when he offered to attach it to my
existing downpipes for a further 40 quid!

Anyway the moral of my little tale is second hand stuff can be good
mmm'kay...

Oh yeah and not to mention the fact that it now sounds meaty as, looks a
whole lot cooler and i can even tell the difference in performance in the
higher revs (although this may just be down to the fact that my last exhaust
was well and truly buggered!)

I have now added a HEL braided hose, wasnt completely sure of it at
first (the differnce) but after a ride out with some lads from the
Bike forum it showed itself, class throughout.

What would pips suggest as the next mod?

Shock or Hugger & Fender extender?

Hi Mav,
Definately Hagon shocks and fork springs. Mine are beginning to
feel a little squishy now but they are coming upto 40,000 bumpy
miles. Much better than the original shocks and springs though.

As for a hugger, they do look good (The NWS one does anyway) and
they do keep lots of crap from covering you and the bike. I used to
have one but I took it off when I started using a larger rear tyre.

Regards

Rob C(The Black Beast is always covered in crap)
