Hi Guys,
I was working on the routes for the trip at the weekend and came to
a startling conclusion. 4 days is not going to be long enough. I'm
happy to add an extra day if you all can make it. Otherwise, we'll
miss out on a lot of the Scottish highlands and John o' Groats - which
for me is the whole point in going there.

Here's the outline so far

Friday. Northampton to Keswick
Satruday: Keswick to Fort William
Sunday Fort William to Wick
Monday: Wick to somewhere in North Yorkshire
Tuesday: Home

I cannot remember the mileages off hand but Keswick to Fort William
is in the region of 350 miles(8 hours). Fort William to Wick via John
0' Groats is around 380 miles(9 hours). Clearly, I'm not taking the
direct routes. Lots of mountains and Loch's to be seen and even a
river crossing by ferry.

So, question time:

Do we have one extra day or miss out on the top half of Scotland?

My vote is one extra day.

Regards

Rob C(The Orange Odyssey is broken)

Hi!

An extra day would not be a problem for me BUT

I've lost track of the dates for the Scottish Trip. Please can you remind me.

I'm going to France on the 12th June for a week so these days are no longer available to me.

Hope it's not this week because I'd love to be able to join you.

Cheers!

Add the extra day.

Not sure I can do it yet, but I'll just head off early if not.

Cheers

Guys i have just been told i have to be at work on the 23rd!! to support downloading of School Exam results. I am trying to convince my boss that i can be avail on my mobile when they start to ensure all starts ok and thereafter be contactable by mob. Obviously this means at an agreed time i will have to be somewhere that i can make the call and check my messages regularly that day. I hope this is acceptable to him and you guys as it will mean stopping to have that initial call.

Jack - 20 - 24 August.

Barry - You can make the extra day, if not, riding home from John o'
Groats is about as long as it gets - plus, we'll all be going the same
way too so you might as well take Tuesday off work too.

Martin - We can stop at times on Monday. With that in mind, I'll make
the mileage shorter that day but it will make Tuesday a bit longer but
that's not a problem.

Geoff - Are you joining us?

Simon - Are you coming for all 5 days? Day 1 we're meeting near
Northampton.

Guys, I'm going to need some help with arranging accommodation.
Martin and I are happy to camp, the rest of you want B&B's but we do
all want to be close together. Can someone start looking for B&B's in
Keswick (Friday), Fort William (Saturday) and Wick (Sunday) for all of
us? I'll research too and between all of us we're sure to find
something.

I'm thinking B&B accommodation might be tough to get in August so
let the other have first dibs. You and I can camp if we can't get in

Rob,

I'll meet you in Keswick on the Friday night and ride up to to Fort William
on the Saturday, staying there Saturday night.
I'll leave you on Sunday morning to come home as I'm off to the Isle of Man
on the Tuesday evening (and don't have much spare hol. to play with!)

A good B&B in Fort William (m/c friendly too) is:

Hi Martin,
I was just going to blast up the A34/A43 to get there as quickly as
possible. Diverting to Worcester would mean I leave an hour earlier
and I don't want to do that. Let's split the difference, how about we
meet a J10 services on the M40/A43 junction? I'll probably need a pee
and a coffee by the time I get there anyway. From there we just
wander up the A43 to Northampton. It takes me 2 hours to get there
and I'd want to be there for 9am.

Hi Martin,
I'm going to do some research into Youth Hostels. Maybe they, or
the like, can put us up each night. I think the days are going to be
pretty long so unpacking and packing a tent each day is 2 hours we can
spend in the pub instead.

I'm having a bit of bother making Monday a short day. So far, Wick
to Hawick is 410 miles. So the ride home on Tuesday is from just
beyond the border. Hawick is just a few miles north west of Kielder.

Are you wired up to take phone calls on the move? Obviously, we'd
stop when you receive a work call. That would save stopping so often
to check for missed calls.

It sounds stupid but I didn't realise how big Scotland is. It's
taking us 3 whole days to go up the west coast, north coast and down
the east and mid-east back down to the border! If we average around
40mph we'll be on the road for 10 hours each day.

Phil, I've not decided on an exact meeting place but it's probably
going to be somewhere in the region of Sywel Resevoir - between
Northampton and Wellingborough - at 10am. We've then got a 300 mile
ride to Keswick. Would you be spending Saturday night with us?

Hi Rob, I thought it would be a lot to achieve in the time scales... the thing we dont want to do is spend so much time riding we dont have time to take in the sights, or stop end chat etc. Is it better to shorten the distance and have more time?... 10 hours each day seems a tad excessive!
I am going to try and rig myself up to take calls on the move if i can, i have a blue tooth dongle and headset that should work with my mobile. Its a flip phone though and that can make it difficult to answer through the tank bag.... may take old backup phone for that day... i will work on it.

Martin, if we hit the road at 06:00 each morning we'll be fine :-)
You and I have flip front helmets so we can eat and drink on the
move :-0

Seriously though;

When you look at the routes you'll see that I'm not meandering all
over the place. There aren't too many roads up there to choose from!

I'll spend some time tweaking the routes. To be honest, Monday is the
longest day. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are all 6-8 hours -
according to the software - which is normal for our trips. I know I
said I'd make Monday short but that would leave us a 500 mile ride
home on Tuesday.

If we reckon on being parked up at the digs for 19:00 each night we've
time for S.S.S before going for food & beer.

As ever, if by mid afternoon on each day we're running late we can
adjust the route to bypass some places. Fuel stops for both bike and
rider always influence the days routes.

Leave it to me. I'll see what I can do to shave a few miles off here
and there.

I tend to agree that cramming to many hours into each day will take the enjoyment out of the trip.  As much as I am glad that I did my trip around western Europe it did take a lot out of me. Mind you I'm an old man. However I personally wouldn't be happy to try and cram 10 hours into each day.

Cheers!

Hello Martin Jack here.

Here is my mobile number. 07801 704075. Didn't realise you lived so close to me. I'm in Thornbury South Gloucestershire.

If you fancy a ride out one evening now the days are longer just let me know.

I can be up your end at a time to suit you as I don't work.

Only evening I can't make it is Wednesday.

On the Scottish Trip if you like and are able we can head north a day earlier or the night before and stay at my place just north of Manchester and meet the others in that part of the world.

When we get to see the routes we can decide where.  Just a thought. You might not be able to do this.

Thanks Pete :-)

Yes took delivery of a zzr-1400 about a month ago and have been
quietly running it in...easiest bike I've ever had to run in. Was
limited to 4k rpm for the first 500 miles but it would happily do 75
in top. I can currently use 6k rpm (red lines at 11) and in top that
does...well you don't want to know! Took a while to get the right deal
(wanted a fair few extras) and even longer to get reasonable
insurance...

The weight and physicality of it had always stopped me...but I test
rode one back in april and was taken aback at how docile it is. Yes it
is big, and heavy but its very usable and whilst you do have muscle it
round corners (I'd better develop some then) its happily planted, the
brakes are phenomenal and it has that warp speed factor!

Jumping back onto the 600 was a revelation...the brakes are soo
bad...but its a hoot throwing it around and actually being able to
thrash a bike once more...so glad I've kept it.

Martyn has already taken great delight in making fun of the chavtastic
gold wheels on the 14...

Well, the wheels are more a sort of bronze colour, although some other
bits are gold. When I think back to the stick Baz gave me over my
Champagne Gold ER5! I ordered it blind over the phone through Georeg
Whites, and they assured me it was s!ilver! Grrrr.
It is a serious bike, an awsome looking beast. Almost makes Baz look
grown up! ;-)
Thanks for visiting a cripple and showing it to me, Baz.
Cheers

PS How long until you pick out the tyre lettering in gold? : ))

Hi Martin,
Keswick(Fri), Fort William(Sat), Wick(Sun) and Hawick(Mon).

Sorry, not been able to investigate the possibility of using
hostels. I'm rather busy at the weekends. Could you help out and do
some research please? Start with Googling "Scotland Hostels".

I really am pushed for time, I'm busy with work in the evenings and
my wife has started working weekends so I have to look after the
kids. Plus both the GS and the Versys are off the road so I'm trying
to get those fixed too.

Hi Guys,
Check this out:

http://www.syha.org.uk/home.aspx

I've found hostels at Glencoe (near Fort William - Saturday), John O'
Groats (Sunday) and Kirk Yelholm (Monday) that currently have spare
beds on the nights we're there. Cheap too, less than £20 per night.
We would have to buy temporary SYHA membership but at £2/night it must
be worth it.

Let me know if you guys think they will be suitable. They must have
pub grub available close by.

Would someone be able to give each one a ring to see if we can park
there and eat nearby?

Hi Martin,
I was just about to say the numbers are on the booking page for each
hostel but they're not.

Try here: http://www.syha.org.uk/about_us/contact_us.aspx

Pete, Martyn and Barry found B&B's in Keswick last time we were up
there. Guys, can you remember details?

Rob, I stayed at Crow Park hotel.http://www.crowpark.co.uk/ that time.
It is fairly traditional but they were surprisingly welcoming to me as
a biker, and they still send me an e newsletter, and I will probably
stay there again at some point.
Not the cheapest, as about £50/night B&B.

I have heard good things about this placehttp://www.crowpark.co.uk/
(an old railway sleeper carriage on an old disused line!) for bikers
to stay cheaply (from £14/night), but never used it myself. I think it
is on your route but may not coincide with a convenient overnight
stop.

Wish I was able to ride, instead of sitting here with my leg in
plaster.

Cheers

Do I really have to put my hand up? I'd feel a fool in this large
open plan office.

Just take is as read I'm coming. After all, I'm the only one who
knows how we're getting places at the moment :-)

Martyn & Martin, The railway carriage looks interesting but it's 60+
miles south of Wick which would add another hour or so to what is
already quite a long day. Somewhere else around Wick will be best.

Hi sorry for the late reply
I'd really love to make this trip but I don't think I'll have enough
holiday left to make the 5 days and it will I'm sure take all of that,
I think it will be (for me) more miles than we did on our trip the
Switzerland a few years ago. I have been toying with the idea of
meeting you up in the lakes then going onto Fort William with you then
returned from there taking 2 days and the scenic route back down to
Kent. But I'll not even know that for sure until later in the year. So
I'll keep watching this thread and book my own accommodation later if
I can make part of the trip.

Sounds a great idea hope the weather holds

Hi Chaps,
I need a quick reply on this one from Simon, Martin and Barry.

I've been able to find a B&B in Keswick at £45 per night. It is
Middle Ruddings: http://www.middle-ruddings.co.uk/

They have 2 twin rooms they are willing to let us have for Friday
20th August. Normally they impose a 2 night minimum.

If you guys are willing to share a room (separate beds of course)
for the night then let me know and I'll have them reserve the rooms.
However, I will need you guys to contact them to confirm and make any
payments/deposits that may be necessary. The enquiry is in my name
and I spoke to Mrs. McMaster.

This is the best I can do for Keswick. Like I say, we need to be
quick because they're not holding the rooms so if someone wants to
book them for 2 nights we'll be booted out if we're too slow.

Guys, can I have your mobile numbers so I can text you when I have
accommodation updates? My number is 07970 125828.

Again, I need quick replies.

Simon, I forgot you weren't staying on Saturday night. I'll book two
rooms in Fort William - 1 single and 1 twin.

Martin, Yes, you will need to ring each one.

I didn't ask them about payments but I did say each of us will be

know again.

I'll phone them back and book 2 twins in Keswick for Friday and 1
single and 1 twin in Fort William for Saturday.

Barry, you'll need to phone them too.

I don't want to pay up front for everyone this time like I used to.

Hope you guys have a great ride out in Scotland. Really disappointed
that I can't make it this year, always fancied taking a bike trip up
to Scotland, but all my remaining holiday is taken up with a long trip
around Auz this year. I have in fact one day left so had thought
about joining you all in the Lakes then riding to Fort William with
you but that would make my return trip 530 miles on the Sunday which
is too long a day in the saddle for me particularly if the weather is
crap.

Hi Martin,
Yes, I've got most of it sorted now. Not sure if you can load it
into your Tom Tom. Barry will be able to load it into his Zumo -
because that what I have - so you shouldn't get lost. I'll provide
printed directions too in case non of us get Satellite coverage in the
remote areas.

I am just back from a trip up North, stayed in Aberdeen, Inverness and Skye. Went to Ullapool, Ardgay and the North of Skye. Been To John O'Groats, Wick and Thurso. No problems with Sat coverage on my TomTom Rider V2 so you guys should be fine.

On the bad note my TomTom Rider V2 is now broken, it would appear that the touch screen is broken, booked in for a repair assessment just waiting on the stuff being sent from TomTom.

Hope the weather is nice for you guys as it was a bit miserable for us.

Hope you all have a great time guys and the weather is good to you.

Must be a relief to get your accommodation sorted.

Look forward (with envy) to the reports and pics afterwards.

Cheers!

p.s. My wrist after my crash suffered more damage than I realised at the time. Torn tendons are still keeping me in a splint.

Again

Enjoy!!!!!!!

Chaps, you can convert between different sat nav software with the
free utility GPSU http://www.gpsu.co.uk/
It's dead easy to use. Download it, then save the file of waypoints
you want to convert to your desktop. Drag the file onto the GPSU icon,
and it will convert it to be compatible with practically any sat nav
software (you select the right one from the available list). It is
used by a lot of navigational rally competitors (like the Iron Butt
Rally), as very useful if you prefer to work in Autoroute for route
planning, as its a bit more sophisticated than things like Garmin's
Mapsource.

I bought one but crashed the bike before I got chance to use it.

I've decided to get the bike back on the road once my wrist is right.

Anyone know a good source for fairings?

Morning Chaps,
I've uploaded the route plans for the trip. They're not perfect but
I don't want to spend any more time on them. Any changes can be made
on the day.

The text route plan and the .gdb (Garmin) route plans are all here:

http://groups.google.com/group/kawasakier5/web/route_plan
http://groups.google.com/group/kawasakier5/web/Mon-Wick-Loch_Ness.gdb
http://groups.google.com/group/kawasakier5/web/Mon-Loch_Ness-Dundee.gdb

http://groups.google.com/group/kawasakier5/web/Sat-Carsphairn-Cloch.gdb

The meeting place is 10am here:

Pitsford Resevoir at Holcot inbetween the A508 and A43. It's a few
miles north of Northampton. There is a car park on the east side of
the resevoir where we can meet. If it's raining we can find some
shelter in Holcot itself. We all have each others mobile numbers and
I can receive calls on the move.

Phil, are you still joining us for the Friday(20th) daytime?

Regards

Looks great Rob, meet place is a nice leisurely ride for me too :-)

I'll download the routes next couple of days, I might have to take a
little detour on the sunday and meet you guys later on but I'll look
at the oute see if that is possible.

Cheers for you all hard work,

Barry

Um, anyone know how to load these up - I don't have mapsource (mines a
cheap and cheerful zumo400). I 've tried putting them in the garmin
folder, then in the gpx folder, then on the sd card...running out of
ideas - zumo forums all say to import via mapsource.

I even a had peek at Martyn's suggestion but pretty much got no where,
I don't think that software recognises gdb files only gpx.

Hi Barry,
Text me your address and I'll send you a copy of Mapsource. I
reckon I can copy it ok.

In the meantime, try to download it from Garmin. Garmin support
might be able to help too. Give them a ring, they really are helpful.

Unfortunately you can't use Mapsource to download waypoints etc to all
Garmin sat nav's. I can with my old Quest but can't with the cheap
Nuvi 200 I bought this year for the car. Think your only option might
be inputting manually as per p19 of the Nuvi 400 manual, Baz, which is
a bit of a pain.
Anyone used Tyre software with a TomTom? I believe its works with
googlemaps, which is handy, and I like the fact that TomTom don't
fleece you for maps as much as Garmin do.
Have a good trip chaps. My knee has recovered to the point that I can
now bend it to 110degrees, so doc doesn't want to see me a\gain
(although physio does until its normal), and I am allowed to drive and
ride. Just in time for my trip to the US on Friday to do a ride!!!
Phew!!
Cheers

Hi Barry,
I just read on another forum that you should be able to copy the
route files to the GPX folder on your Zumo. You'd have to convert
them from the .gdb format to .gpx. Does the tool Martyn mentioned do
that?

I'd still call Garmin if I were you though.

Hi Barry,
I'll email you the routes in GPX format tomorrow. My Zumo creates a
backup copy in this format.

If your Zumo doesn't immediately recognise and ask you if you want
to import the routes you should be able to by going to Settings, User
Data, Import Routes. Try doing this with the .gdb files you already
have.
