Hey there My name is Adam and im a 25 year old new comer to this game.

I just got my First ER I had an EX500  (ninja/ gpz 500) untill it was stolen and loved it
And just got a 1997 ER I fixed it up and its in good condition now.

Better handling then the GPZ shame about the poor breaks

Even though its the same engine i seem to be getting alot less power out of it
i know the gear is different...

In any case I changed The cdi in my ER to a (ex500 ninja) CDI
and im feeling a bit of a difference but not anything to crazy.

is this a placebo?
prismatic?

Thanks allot i really appreciate it!

Welcome Adam,

Not been alot of talk on the mods of an ER5 on this forum since i have
been registered but i am a member on the http://www.bikersoracle.com/er5/forum/
aswell and there is a few discussions on mods i.e. GPZ Carbs, GPZ CDI
unit, Fork Mods and other things that you might like to check out. Not
that i am trying to get you away from this forum just that there is
more of this kind of chat over there?

Where based????

Hi Adam,
Some bits of the ER5 engine differ. The ER5 has 50bhp and the GPZ
has 60bhp. So you're right, your ER5 does have less power.

Hi Martin,
I'll do my best.

Jack, the rough plan is something like this:

Friday: Meet mid-England - Northampton area. Ride up the west side
and stop for the night somewhere in the Lake District;
Saturday: Ride through Scotland to John O' Groats;
Sunday: Ride down through Scotland to somewhere in Yorkshire -
possibly the coast;
Monday: Do as we normally do, find a nice route home and split up
wherever someone has to turn off.

I've not planned any routes and I have no idea of the mileage so I
don't even know if it is feasible yet.

Regards

Rob C(The Orange Odyssey needs to cover some miles)

Hi Guys,
August 20-23 remains the date for the UK trip.

Quick headcount:

Martin G,
Barry,
Jack.

Anyone else?

Accommodation preferences then? Camping, hotel/B&B or a combination
of both?

I'll start the planning when I can get my route planner software
working again.

Regards

I don't want to camp. Getting a bit old for it and anyway it's more to carry and therefore to try and keep control of on my bike.

Having said that those dates are good for me.

Cheers!

Martin, don't kiss me. Just buy me beer.

I've got the route planning software working now and I've got a decent
route (judging by my paper AA map) planned from Northampton to Keswick
via the Peak District (Snake Pass) and Yorkshire Dales(Garsdale Pass).

When I've done the rest I'll post them.

Personally, I've not decided if I'll take my tent. I think Saturday
and Sunday are going to be long days and going by how long it took to
pack up and get breakfast each morning on the Long Way Across trip it
might just prove to be too much. Where possible, I'd like to use
Travelodge's (or similar) and if we book soon we should be able to get
cheap rooms.

Hopefully, I'll have the routes pretty much sorted by the weekend.
Then we can go about finding accommodation somewhere close to each
days end point.

So, just the four of us? None of the other usual suspects coming?

Simon, we're coming up your way if you fancy a day or two on the road.

Phil, it's been a while since you came with us.

Pete, you up for it? I know you don't mind a high mileage weekend
when the company and beer is good.

Jason, Ross, you know you both want to.

Steven, you still alive?

Barry, trading in the ZZR? What's coming next, ZZR 1400?

Regards

Hi Rob,

Yes, I'll meet up with you on the Saturday or the Sunday.

I had thought I was going to be away at the Manx GP (have gone for the last
6 years) but a check of the calendar shows departure day is Tues. 24th Aug.
(The bank holiday is on Monday 30th)

Keswick and Garsdale are only about 100 miles from here.

Might even drag out the ER-5 - that would be novel!

Hi Simon,
Nice to hear from you. It will be nice to see an ER-5 out on the
ER-5 outing. Not too many here these days. I think I'll be on the
Versys this time rather than the GS but who knows. It all depends on
which one has the newest tyres at the time.

Hi Everyone.

Ok, 30,000 miles up on my ER5 and I need a new chain and sprockets. Any advice on the best ones to get and where to get them? Gericke's do the lot for £100. Sound reasonable?

Hi Guys,
I am very interested in coming along however I am working on your preferred weekend. If that changes and I can wrangle some leave I will join you!

I am off to France next week,Germany in May and Wales in July amongst other stuff and for my sins have now become vice chair of the local IAM group( an organization I spent years trying to avoid!) I have just bought an 8 year old GS1150 (with 12500 miles on the clock) , what a machine! I still have the TDM900 but the TRX850,s have gone now!

I have said it before but I still think my days touring on the ER5,sometimes with you guys were the best! Some of these IAM guys are a bit high maintenance and unless they have a GPS route to take them to a table in a tea room at precisely tea time with a nice view they are not happy. If you do achieve that ,the same bloke will say well done, excellent tea room and then proceed to pull you riding apart! Thankfully most of the members are normal, whatever that is!

I do hope to catch up with you guys soon! I guess the best way is to organize something when I am not at work!! Roll on retirement -- 7 years to go!!

If any of you are interested ,Google HBAM and you will have access to info about the group I am in. If you are interested in joining then come along to a bikesafe event in the area (where it will be cheaper)

Take care on those roads all of you,

Phil

Hi Keith,

I have good experiences with the tsubaki omega chains, and also with
RK xw-ring chains on my ER-5. I can advise you not to buy a cheap
chain, my experience is that the more expensive chains last so much
longer that in the end they turn out to be the cheapest option.

Hi Phil,
Nice to hear from you. I've got an 8 year old R1150GS too. I hope
yours is not the special blue and white one like mine. That said, of
course it is, yeracopper. Can't be having two blue and white 8 year
old GS's on the trip; I'd be all confused in the mornings when I can't
get yours started with my key :-)

As you're getting close to retirement, can't you wangle a sickie and
blame it on your ageing joints or something? Then hop on your bike
for 4 days of R&R.

Anyone else want to come along? Dave? Geoff? Anyone? The more the
merrier - remember each of you needs to buy the organiser a beer or
two. If enough of you come along I need never get close to the
bar :-)

Hi Geoff,
Which side of the river? I still work in Canary Wharf. I
occasionally use the Woolwich ferry to get across the river if the
Blackwall tunnel is stuffed. Normally, I use the A2 & A102. If I use
the ferry I use the A206 to get to Woolwich. Maybe we'll end up on
the same bit of road one day.

I use A2 to Black Prince junction and the cut across end of Bexleyheath High Street, then cut across to Plumstead and onto Woolwich. Site is next to old Wollwich arsenal site on south side of river. Start time is 07:30, finishing at 16:30.
