Hi Guys & girls, I'm thinking about buying a sat nav, but theres so
much choice out there.. anyone got any advice as to what's best???
TomTom Rider looks good but a bit too pricey for my wallet... What I'd
like is a sat nav I could use on both the bike and in the car, don't
know if any can be used for both???
Any advice anyone has got will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

I have the TomTom Rider V2. Its a good piece of kit and you can buy the car kit for it as an extra so again more money i'm afraid. because it is designed for the bike it has a decent battery life too i reckon i can get 4 hours out of it but you can wire up the cable so it charges as you ride. The other option is the Garmin one can't remember what its called to be honest but i think its more expensive.

I have heard of people using normal car sat navs but the are not normally waterproof so have to be kept in a tank bag or something. The other thing about the Rider is that you have the bluetooth headset that is included in the box i think the gamin come as an extra you have to pay for.

If there is anything else i can help with let me know

It's  nice to see emails appearing in my inbox from the group again.

I'm living down near Bristol now and was wondering if anyone was planning any rides this year.

I missed the company and the enjoyment of our rides in the past.

Hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying their riding.

Cheers!

I don’t think I will be able to make it this year unless we make it
later in the year. I’m working in Los Angles until 25 June. Eat your
hearts out, rented a Victory Hammer a few days ago and went for a ride
up the coast with temps in the 20’s and blazing sunshine!!!

Actually you might want to give it a thought. I have a three bedroom
place two blocks from the beach and can easily accommodate four of
you. Bike rentals go for about £50 to 60 per day all inclusive.
You can get a return air fare from Heathrow to LAX for under £500

My twopennyworth, for what its worth.
The Garmin Zumo 660 is by all accounts (I know several people with
them) the mutts nuts. Trouble with Garmin is they rip you off for the
maps and updates. When you buy maps or updates they are only useable
on the sat nav you buy them for. I understand that with Tom Tom, you
can use them with any Tom Tom, should your machine go tits up, or you
upgrade. Can be quite a saving. Garmin were ahead of the field a few
years ago, but I think the latest Tom Tom Rider has caught up, and is
better value.
I still use a 4 year old Garmin Quest, which is still going strong
(touch wood!), although the screen is small by current standards.
Because I am worried it might die on me soon, as a back-up for the
Brit Butt Rally, I bought a Garmin Nuvi 200 from Screwfix a few weeks
ago, for a mere £59! Very impressed with it in the car. I can run it
off the 12v lead on the bike and I am toying with getting the bicycle
handlebar mount (£12) and putting it on the bike, either rigging it
up a waterproof bag of some sort, or a waterproof tupperware type box,
as I know someone that has done that successfully using a car nav on a
bike.

Cheers

Hi Martyn,

Thanks for your twopennyworth.. It looked as though my post had been
hi-jacked with other things. The Garmin Nuvi 200 sounds ok, it is just
the UK and N.Ireland or does it have Europe as well? I suppose if you
tuck it up under the screen of your bike it'll stay pretty dry anyway
so yes a waterproof bag or tupperware container should be ok.

There are some out there with bluetooth so my line of thinking is: in
the car listen to the spoken instruction, and on the bike place it
somewhere dry (tankbag or tupperware container) then use a bluetooth
earpiece so I can hear the spoken instruction rather than keep looking
down at the satnav all the time. As i'm not to techy, do you this
would work?????

Anyway thanks for you contribution... hopefully see you soon.

When I did the 3500 miles around Europe in 2008 I used a car satnav bought from Aldi.

I made sure I charged it every night and only used it to find my way to my destination once I reached the vicinity. For the rest of the journey I referred to maps.

I stuck it to my tank using velcro strips and listened to the instructions using bud earphones, because by putting my helmet on carefully they weren't pulled out of place.

It never let me down.

Dave, I have never used bluetooth on the bike, as I have Autocom,
which I use in conjunction with Nancomms custom moulded earplugs with
built in speakers (made by my hearing aid man for a round £100!).
Definitely be good for you to hear the sat nav instructions, as well
as see it, though, and that is something I won't be getting with the
Nuvi 200 on the bike, but as it is intended as a back up, I can live
with that.
I wouldn't count on the screen to keep it dry much, though. When its
pissing down on a bike, water goes in all directions including
upwards! I have a waterproof clear camera bag for beach use, that I
may try and adapt, as the trouble with a tupperware type box is you
won't be able to touch the screen without taking the lid off - not
that I would do such a thing as touch a sat nav whilst in motion,
obvioulsy, as that wouldn't be safe or legal! ; - )

I take it you are no longer bikeless, then? What ya got now?

Cheers

Thanks to Jack and to Martyn for their comments. First I need a sat
nav that has Europe maps, then I'd like to listen to the instructions
rather than looking down at a screen whilst trying to negotiate a
junction. There are a fast selection of sat nav's out there so just
want to be sure I don't buy a rubbish one!!!! Oh, and of course we
all believe you Martyn, no-body would ever be so daft as to play with
the sat nav whilst in motion.. :-)

At the moment I am still bikelss, but once I make my mind up as to
what to get, then I'll get another... just can't make my mind up. I do
like the Fazer, but they are like belly buttons on this site...
everyone's got one!
Thought about a Trimph, a BMW, a KTM, most things really but cannot
make my mind up (gotta have more than a cupfull of fuel capacity
tho...unlike the Hornet!!)
Once I make my mind up.... you lot will be the first to be told.

Hi Guys,
The Garmin Zumo 550 is great ,easy to use, bluetooth,mp3, waterproof ,
fantastic bit of kit!
I am told they are bringing a simpler cheaper device out soon as the Zumo is
too expensive to produce!

There are plenty of 550,s around on eBay still and with other sellers.

Well worth the money to me ( I do lead loads of rides now with a local IAM
group )

A lot to splash out if you are not going to use it much!

I paid 370 for a reconditioned unit from Garmin.

Hi Phil,
The zumo 550 sounds ideal by the write up's on tinternet.. and having
just browsed e-bay there are quite a few on there. but to be honest
for not a lot less than you paid. Way out of my price range!!
Both Jack and Martyn have a lot cheaper versions and they both seem
happy with them so I'll have to keep looking for something in between.
There's no real rush, as long as I have it by the time 'Across the

Thanks

I know a couple of people who have the Zumo 550, like Phil, and reckon
it is as good as the 660, and have no intention of upgrading.
The Nuvi 200 comes just with UK maps, Dave, but it has a card slot,
and I believe you can get other countries on cards. I certainly hope
so, as I need a France on, as I am sure I will end up across the water
on this years Brit Butt rally, as the starting base is only just north
of the M25, at Cheshunt.

My dad has the TomTom rider, I agree that it is rather expensive, but
my dad is very happy with it. He also uses it in the car. He has a
built in bluetooth headset in his helmet that he also uses for making
phone calls.

It is expensive but only because it is designed for a smaller market.
You buy a car satnav and you have to then think about waterproofing,
how you hear instructions and how it will be powered. You buy the
Rider unit and its a case of fix it to the bike and off you go every
thing you need is in the box. the Rider can be used in the car without
the car kit but i would recommend getting it as its alot better with
it.

I seen a boy touring on a CBR600f and he used a SatNav application on
mobile device using his earphones for hearing the directions.

I use a Zumo 400, much much cheaper than the 550 or the 660...but no
bluetooth.

Unfortunately they still go for around the 200 quid mark (if you can

Just picked up the Hein Gericke 2010 catalogue.

There's lots of gadgets and gizmos for attaching satnavs to the bike,
special tank bags and the like. I remember having to contact a
specialist company in Wales to get an extension on the bar mount for
mine a couple of years back!!

There's also a Zumo 220, a cut down 660...still on the pricey side
though.
