Dear All,

I would like to encourage you to submit a selected set from your own photography to be displayed at KAUST Library on May 15th, as part of the Art Exhibition that KAUST Library is arranging.

An art committee will look at your photos and approve them for display in the exhibition. They will contact you once they select the approved photos. The library staff will take care of printing+framing logistics, while printing and framing cost should be covered by the photographer.

The cost will differ from picture to another, depending on printing size, and printing media (canvas, photo paper .. etc) which should be specified by the photographer. From my experience in printing-on-canvas + framing costs in Jedda, the cost will not exceed SR 400 per meter squared ( 1 m x 1 m  photo ), and it might be even less than that if we have a big group of pictures all printed at once. Printing costs will be confirmed by Library staff in the following few days.

Submission deadline is on May 5th, so please send your soft copies to Brian George on brian....@kaust.edu.sa

For more information, please contact Sarah Algirim at : sarah....@kaust.edu.sa

Regards,
Muhannad Abu-Ghdaib

Call for entries: "Artists of KAUST" exhibit at KAUST Library

KAUST residents are invited to submit their original works of visual art for display in the KAUST Library, located on the university quad.

The deadline for entries is noon on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. To submit works, phone Brian George at 808-3626 (mobile 054 682 1231) or email brian....@kaust.edu.sa and schedule a time to deliver your work and fill out a submission form.

The exhibition will open with a reception on May 15 from 5:00-7:00 PM and will run until May 26.

KAUST Library offers an inspiring surrounding to display works of art and introduce them to the many people who visit the library and its café each day.

Examples of art works that are sought for inclusion in the exhibit include paintings, photography, fabric art, jewelry, sculpture, and ceramics.

A committee made up of community members will review all exhibition material.

Final acceptance for the exhibit is contingent upon the review of the committee. Artists will be notified of selection by Saturday, May 8. Submissions must be display-ready.

The exhibit is being organized jointly by the KAUST Office of the Arts and KAUST Library.

Hi Everyone,

Let's try to get a single set of information about this contest. We
can put it on the Photo Group website page, and also it will go in the
RedSeaNews next week..

We also need these questions answered, previously sent to the the
Library people:

We will probably cover this in more detail in next week's RedSeaNews
Community Newsletter, although there may be an initial item this week.
---------------------( COPY )--------------------------
A few Questions:

- How many entries may a person make?

- May a person offer entries in more than one media?

- May a person working at KAUST but not a KAUST employee enter? (These
people are allowed to be members of Self-Directed Groups such as the
Art Group, etc, as non-voting members).

- Will there be secure display capability for items such as Jewelry of
intrinsic value?

- Does "Display Ready" imply that flat graphic art must be Framed?

Thanks! We would like to be able to answer these, and make everything
clear to members of the Art and Photography groups.

Dear All,

The library staff called me today and they revoked  their offer of taking care of printing and framing logistics. Therefore, any photographer willing to participate in the art exhibition should take care of printing his/her own pictures on a hard medium, and submit his/her photos to the library in hard format.

Loose media, like unframed paper or unstretched canvas, will not be accepted since they won't be able to hang the picture on the wall, neither put it on an easel.

For more information, please contact Sarah Algirim at sarah....@kaust.edu.sa

I apologize for any inconvenience.

Kind regards,
Muhannad Abu-Ghdaib

The language of the release artists will be asked to sign is as
follows:
---------------------( COPY )--------------------------
Consent to Photography and Video Recording: I , the undersigned
(“ARTIST”),
consent and give my permission to KAUST and/or third parties
designated by
KAUST to photograph, video record or otherwise capture images of me
and of
my artwork submitted in the “Artists of KAUST” Exhibit (“Exhibit”).
Further, KAUST may use such images in all forms of media for any and
all
purposes, including, but not limited to, promotion, advertising,
display, or
exhibition.
-----------------( END COPY )----------------------

This is the original form parents at the school and I believe,
University students were asked to sign. Quite a few KAUST Schools
parents refused this blanket permission.

Personally, as an artist, I find this has no protection for the
artist. What do you think??

Can we find typical language from other well-know exhibits to suggest
otherwise??

I'll try to follow up on this...

There should at least be mention or acknowledgement of the artist - all photographers wish to have the photo accredited to them and I for one would not be happy for any of my photos to be published without acknowledgement.

Terry,

As a practical matter, I think the key points are:

* KAUST is *not* taking ownership of the work. It's rights are non-exclusive.
* It is *not* interfering with your right to monetize your work.
* It *is* securing rights to display the work, which will give it (and
the artist) broader exposure.

Realistically, KAUST is hardly in a position to make "commercial" use
of the works. And I suspect few of those submitting works are putting
at risk income they expect to receive from licensing their works.

Susan,

FWIW, the library's plan is to 1) display a label with each work
showing the artist's name and 2) create an exhibit catalog that
provides more information on each work/artist (but no reproduction of
the work itself).
