Magnitude 9.0 in Japan: An Earthquake and its Consequences

By P. Martin Mai,  Associate Professor of Geophysics

King Abdullah University of Science & Technology

In despair we are witnessing the tragic events in Japan. Thousands of people have died, several hundred thousands are evacuated. The gigantic M 9.0 caused widespread destruction, mainly due to the tsunami that affected large areas of Japan’s coast. One nuclear power plant is damaged to an extent such that a major nuclear catastrophe cannot be excluded. The economy in Japan, and perhaps in the whole world, may face major consequences. What happened during this earthquake, and why are its effects so dramatic?

This talk explains the processes in the Earth that are responsible for earthquakes to occur, focusing on the recent and potential future events in Japan. The lecture addresses the generation of tsunamis and their destructive effects, even 1000’s of miles away from the epicenter.

The talk will conclude with exploring the question whether earthquakes should be of concern in Saudi Arabia and for KAUST.
