Where Will the Food Come From in a Hotter, Drier World? Nina Fedoroff, Distinguished Visiting Professor The climate is warming. Water tables are falling around the world. Biodiversity is under ever-increasing pressure. The amount of arable land has not changed in more than half a century. Yet, the human population continues to grow. Food prices are at an all-time high. How do we double the food supply while decreasing the ecological and water footprints of our agriculture? This is perhaps the most profound challenge of the twenty-first century. In this lecture, Professor Fedoroff will explore the scientific, technical, societal and global dimensions of this challenge. Date: Monday, September 19, 2011 A reception with refreshments will follow the lecture. |

Please join us on the eve of International Day of Peace for a PEACE WALK TO THE BEACON.
WHEN: Tuesday, Sept 20
TIME: Starting at 7:00pm to end by 8:00pm
MEETING PLACE: The sea end of the walkway by the Boathouse (near the Yacht Club)
WHO: Everyone. All age children and adults are welcome
WHY: To honor our similarities in co-habiting the same planet and the same compound
HOW: By walking together in peaceful celebration
The International Day of Peace, also known as the World Peace Day,
occurs annually on September 21. It is celebrated each year to
recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and
promote peace. It is observed by many nations, political groups,
military groups, and peoples all over the world. The first year this
holiday was celebrated was 1981. To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell"
is rung at UN Headquarters in New York City. The bell is cast from
coins donated by children from all continents. It was given as a gift by
the United Nations Association of Japan, and is referred to as "a
reminder of the human cost of war." The inscription on its side reads:
"Long live absolute world peace."
thanks,
liz

Shall I put the walk to the beacon in the newsletter?
Also - the "WHY" line needs to be corrected to read co-habitating.
