Is there a list detailing which items are recyclable here? I am
specifically wondering if Tetra Brik aseptic cartons are recyclable.

Hi Cheryl,

I don't think they recycle this ones, but as a "pressure measure" (haha) I still wash them and put them with the recyclable items.

Hi Cheryl, Tetra Brik aseptic carton are used for juice.  According to Waste Management, they go into general waste.

Thank you for your contributions!

Altough I'm no longer in KAUST campus, I love being in touch with people interested in the environment and with fresh questions. At the moment I'm in Austria doing a second masters in Industrial Ecology, a new discipline that brings sustainability into an industrial ground.

As far as I've seen in my courses, there is no need to wash any kind of container to be recycled, this would increase the environmental footprint of the product by the water usage. So just remove the major residues of the container and put them in their corresponding bin, the rest can be handled by the recycling processes.

Keep in touch.

Dear Cheryl,

After receiving your emaiI yesterday, I wrote to Waste Management  to confirm what I understood about the Tetra Brik aseptic carton (rec...@kaust.edu.sa).  Actually, the reply I received is the following:

"Kindly note that tetra pack cartons are recyclables and used as recyclable materials in many countries, but in Saudi Arabia there is no vendor for this kind of recyclables due to the existing of nylon mixed with carton and its separation costs a lot, we advise you to  throw it in recyclable bins and we do the proper segregation in our Transfer station until we find a vendor for such a kind of recyclables."

Waste Management would like us to get into the practice of recycling many things that are not actually recycled in Saudi Arabia.  In that way, when a vendor has been found, we will have developed good recycling habits.

All for now,

Rachel
