Award – winning documentary Bag It comes to KAUST Green Group at KAUST in cooperation with WEP 2012 is hosting a screening of the new, award-winning environmental documentary Bag It at Discovery Square Theater on Friday, January 20th at 4PM. Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health. The average “everyman” uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas, USA. The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility. Green Group at KAUST’s screening of Bag It is in alignment with its mission to promote and advocate for an eco-friendly sustainable living environment at KAUST and in alignment with the campaign launched in the Kingdom in May, 2010 by Saudi Arabia’s Prince Turki bin Nasser, head of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment. That campaign titled “My Environment…Green Flag…Green Nation”, aims to bring awareness to the need to reduce single-use plastic use for the health and safety of the Saudi Arabian community and environment. With the screening of Bag It, Green Group at KAUST’s aim is to encourage our community to become part of the solution, not part of the pollution and in doing so deliver to KAUST a more sustainable future.
